The former governor said Obama represented the best hope for an America facing an economic crisis.

Former Republican Gov. Arne Carlson endorsed Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama today, saying Obama represented the best hope for an America facing an economic crisis and criticizing Republicans for waging a mean-spirited campaign that has "been going down all these side roads."

Introduced to a standing ovation at the State Capitol by U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, a Minnesota Democrat, Carlson said his party had strayed from the moderate philosophies of past Republican leaders such as Ohio Sen. Robert Taft and President Dwight Eisenhower. "I consider myself a Republican maverick," Carlson said in explaining his endorsement of Obama.

If you could get in a ship and travel the universe through all space and time looking for the most vile, despicable sack of sell in the Universe, your search would be over when you found Arnie Carlson.

A RINO endorsing Obama? Gee, what a shock! :)

What a joke:

Carlson said his party had strayed from the moderate philosophies of past Republican leaders such as Ohio Sen. Robert Taft and President Dwight Eisenhower

Even if I accepted that premise -- laughable at least in terms of spending (wildly out of control) -- then how can I not STILL laugh darkly at the notion of reacting to GOP "immoderation" by promoting Obama, probably the most left-wing Democrat ever to be nominated?

The only good thing about this election is that it’s finally exposing all the RINOs. Carlson, Powell, etc. The RNC needs a new rule: when a republican endorses 0bama, they have to turn in their republican party card.

He's a moderate Republican alright. The kind who are happy to make peace with the Democrats in exchange for getting a few crumbs tossed their way. Carlson is an idiot!

During his first term in the Senate, Taft criticized what he believed was the inefficiency and waste of many New Deal programs, and of the need to let private enterprise and businesses restore the nation’s economy instead of relying upon government programs to end the Great Depression. He condemned the New Deal as socialist and attacked deficit spending, high farm subsidies, governmental bureaucracy, the National Labor Relations Board, and nationalized health insurance. However, he did not always follow conservative ideology; for instance, after investigating the lack of adequate housing in the nation he supported public housing programs. He also supported the Social Security program. Taft set forward a conservative program that promoted economic growth, individual economic opportunity, adequate social welfare, strong national defense (primarily the Navy and Air Force), and non-involvement in European wars. He also strongly opposed the military draft on the principle that it limited a young man’s freedom of choice. Broadly speaking, in terms of political philosophy Taft was a libertarian; he opposed nearly all forms of governmental interference in both the national economy and in the private lives of citizens.

sounds a lot like McCain and sure doesn’t sound like Obama.

Now, now. Chris Buckley and Kathleen Parker assure us that Obama will be reasonable and moderate. Because his legislative record (such as it is) is just filled with moderation.

It’s Minnesota, the only state not to vote for Reagan in 1984.
