McCain has cut into Obama's lead for a second day and is now just 1.1 points behind. The spread was 3.7 Wednesday and 6.0 Tuesday. The Republican is making headway with middle- and working- class voters, and has surged 10 points in two days among those earning between $30,000 and $75,000. He has also gone from an 11-point deficit to a 9-point lead among Catholics.

Reverse engineering the internals for rough calculations, I get 31.5% DEM, 30.5% GOP, and 38% IND/Other. The independent/other number is too high. I looked at the Party vs Overall breakouts.

Obviously the table has rounded numbers which makes it difficult to accurately determine the party affiliations. But just looking at the Not Sure column for the Overall and individual Party numbers, it would appear that a good number of respondants were in the IND/Other row.

It's really, really hard to get that age demographic on the phone.

I and other people that I know who have done such polls usually initially ask to speak to the youngest male voter in the house when we make a connect.

A couple of observations about this poll.

The pro-Mac youth vote isn’t a fluke. I looked at this and the previous 10 IBD/TIPP tracking polls and McCain won the yutes 6 out of 11 times. This, along with the news from Gallup that first time voters are tracking about the same as 2004 = bad news for Barry.

The huge swing in Catholics is huge for Mac, especially in OH and PA. Let’s hope this is accurate and holds.

I estimated a Dem vs. GOP sample advantage of about +2%, so this poll is reasonably weighted.

even one of my sisters, who has never voted Republican, said she cannot vote for Obama... she absolutely does not want to see him in the Whitehouse... whew... one of my brothers, who is a Democrat, is voting for McCain so he can spend the next four years looking at Sarah Palin... he can’t stand Obama... loves Hillary...

Considering that the media and most liberal talking heads are dutifully reporting that any white McCain supporter is a racist redneck, I’d be willing to bet most of them are simply saying they’re undecided. Add to that the vandalism and violence the Obama thugs are responsible for and I think it’s a no-brainer.

If they are undecided, I can’t see them motivated enough to stand in a long line to vote.

"I'm 22 and I have a McCain/Palin sticker on my car. Most of my friends can't stand me right now."

If this is true, then the ones who "can't stand you" are not your friends at all.

New feature: track the IBD/TIPP results!

View this Google spreadsheet:

http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pLKmTgcVm7Pd_N-_t7U2cVQ

The 2004 results (2-man race, Bush v. Kerry) are included in a separate sheet. I'll continue to update the 2008 results as they are released.

My 14 year old daughter received an email saying Obama was going to put in a draft. She was freaked and so was the 15 year old kid who sent it to her. I told her to send the info out to her email list.

Maybe that info has something to do with it. Although that 74-22 seems way off.

Interesting, even in 2004, this poll records a lot of Undecided voters. I wonder why that is?

There could be a big backlash among college students. My son is pro McCain, but avoids talking about it at school to keep the faculty’s good opinion. He thought he was almost the only one for awhile, now he’s figuring out the quiet ones are mostly for McCain. And most of the students are quiet.

I have another kid who is pro-Obama and wears it on her T-Shirt. I have 4 kids in their 20’s, and Obama-girl is the one that didn’t register-—OOOOPS (OK, OK, I admit that I forgot, on purpose, to remind her!).
