Democrats' questionable means to a dubious end
Baltimore Sun ^ | 10/22/2008 | Ron Smith

Posted on 10/22/2008 3:51:57 AM PDT by markomalley

This newspaper saw fit this month to airily dismiss allegations of voter fraud against the national community group ACORN as being nothing more than partisan posturing by Republicans. In a lead editorial under the headline "Crying wolf?" The Baltimore Sun said, "ACORN's critics across the country accuse the group's workers of voter fraud, but the claims have the taint of hardball politics."

(snip)

But I've had quite the story told to me about some voter registration efforts right here. An inmate at the Baltimore City Detention Center, whom I'm not naming to protect him from potential retribution, sent me a letter saying, "Today, 10-06-08, all housing units of BCDC were flooded with correctional officers - on duty, I must add - who were going around soliciting inmates to register and vote for Obama." The inmate, who says he's awaiting trial, enclosed sample registration and absentee ballot applications, and asked, "Can you believe that Obama's people would stoop so low as to solicit the criminal vote? The vote of people who have no concept of the political and election processes?" He also said, "Some soliciting guards were even alluding to the idea that Obama's installation would make the criminal justice and prison situation better for them."

Detainees are eligible to vote if they haven't yet been convicted of a crime. Officials acknowledge there has been a voter registration drive at the jail, although they deny that correctional officers were involved. And one might be justified in thinking a letter from a jail inmate shouldn't be offered as credible evidence of such a voter registration effort being made by state employees on the taxpayers' clock. But the question is, does it ring true? Maybe The Baltimore Sun can investigate.

That's a new twist...a voter registration drive of prisoners by on-duty guards.

Just another reason to be proud to live in the Free State. /s

Interesting that this story would run in the BS. Believable, but SO out of character for that rag.

I know it’s old news to those in Baltimore and/or MD but I remember being in the area in 2002 when the sniper case was at its peak along with the race for MD governor.

The sniper case was getting little sidebar stories in the Sun while stories extolling the virtues of yet another no-account Kennedy were presented daily as above-the-fold ‘news’ stories.

This wasn’t bias. This was some deranged form of monomania combined with the unfortunate ability to disseminate the madness across a large area.

In a way it was liberating. The Sun is and was so far gone that they make a mockery of themselves.

One has to ask who other than the correctional officers would have access to conduct should a registration drive. Can anyone just walk into the detention center and have access to the inmates.

Ron Smith is the local conservative radio talk show host. The article is his editorial. The BS is otherwise unreadable if you are looking for factual information.

Isn’t the leftist propaganda sheet that calls itself the Baltimore Sun on the verge of bankruptcy? This paper is nothing but a sales brochure for the Democrat Party. I have never heard of anyone who actually buys it or reads it.

I’m surprised they printed a Ron Smith diatribe.

Ron Smith is the local conservative radio talk show host.

Ron Smith is a local libertarian, anti-Bush, anti-Iraq war radio talk show host, on a station that had a major shift in hosts when it entered into some kind of partnership with the totally leftwing Baltimore Sun.

Rush Limbaugh even left that station, and is now on a station that carries, among others - Sean Hannity and Mark Levin.

They are conservatives, not Ron Smith.

For the SUN to carry Ron Smith as their conservative columnist is like the NY Times carrying David Brooks as their conservative writer.

LOL! I once praised David Brooks on a thread here on FR and will to live to regret it for years to come. He has really let us down this time. His unseemly diatribe after the 3rd debate (about a tortured war veterans' physical stiffness being too hard to look at for the next four years compared to the smooth Obama) made me physically sick.

When I look at McCain, and his stiffness, I see the triumph of the Vietnam warrior over the Ayers and Kerrys of the seventies.

I am Willing him to win for Everyone who fought, or was related to someone who fought, in Vietnam.

This is the final round of what was begun in the hippy dippy sixties.

That kind of talk makes Brooks sound like an immature jerk rather than a “respected” columnist.

Horrifying. I even read his Bobos in Paradise book some years ago; but now...

I'm done with David Brooks.
