“”I was on board the USS Enterprise,” McCain, a former naval aviator, said in the capital city of Harrisburg. “I sat in the cockpit, on the flight deck of the USS Enterprise, off of Cuba. I had a target. My friends, you know how close we came to a nuclear war.”

I remember the crisis well, I was in the newspaper business then, the Houston Press, at the time Houston had three daily papers and competition was stiff.

While I had not been in the military yet I knew that my efforts to get the news to the public were important, it was my job and I took it seriously. I don’t think that anything could have kept me from my responsibilities during that period, except perhaps if I hurt my newspaper throwing arm, or had a flat on my bicycle or something.
