Because of my rank I want to be careful about who I discuss politics with, after all, I don't want to have the allegation made that I am wielding undue influence; If I'm asked by someone junior to me, I tell them, "Officers don't have political positions."
What officers talk about amongst themselves, though, is quite a different story.

I'm a civilian working with the military (a joint command with all branches.) No matter what the rank, they're very candid with us civilians if we initiate the conversation (and even sometimes when we don't.)
It is a VERY PRO-McCain-Palin environment 'round here.

I was always open about what I thought, but I was always conservative, and conservative was always the best description of the military.
We had some interesting concerns and cautions regarding Clinton’s “don’t ask/tell” initiative and also about the incursion into Bosnia/Kosovo.
