That they were too damned lazy to pick their own cotton. Which, incidentally, my husband and I will be doing for the next month (with some big help from John Deere).
Here's a story for you: My spouse's relatives have been in TX for a long time - they are of German descent and had a ton of land where they grew cotton.
The grandfather likes to have schools come out and tour the property, where he shows them some of the old equipment, etc.
Well, last time a group came through, a girl in the group asked him where they kept their slaves. He was really surprised and replied that they'd never had slaves, they had always picked it all themselves. She argued with him and said that all white farm owners had slaves and he was lying. He was stunned.
Her teacher just nodded and said, "Oh yes, we've been learning about the Civil War."
There's ejumacation for ya.

I am by a TV today.CNN and MSNBC are reporting on Obama as if he is GOD and even covering for Biden's gaffe.
The AP Yahoo and mainstream print news are all glowing about Obama in the polls (they say he is up in all states-of course!) and how he is visiting his sick granny over and over and over.
What is Matt Drudge's problem reporting headlines about Oprah fricking Winfrey and Obama? Who gives a rats petard about that?
