I'm pretty sure that most dailies usually lose money on the delivered subscriptions, especially those out of the immediate market (NYC and suburbs). They make their money by advertising which is where they really lose if you cancel because revenues are based on numbers of qualified subscribers or methods of distribution, like news stands and giveaways at hotels. It's not a very efficient model but print publishing is a 20th century method of communication.

A few thousand cancellations won't really effect their income for at least six months and by then they will have a dozen “buy Sunday get six free” promotions to make up for it. Why anyone with internet access pays full freight for a print pub when most if not all the content is available on the web is beyond me.
