That was the politicians’ mistake, the military never gave him a division to command. Amazing that an officer who never led a division could become JCS Chairman.
Powell has every right to his opinion but that doesn't give him, as the Dems love to say, "a blank check" to demand that his rationales for endorsing go unchallenged.
Powell can say that Palin is unqualified vs. Biden is ready from Day 1 and yet that undercuts Obama himself as immedietly being Prez.
Powell can say that Obama has been a lifelong Christian and that McCain has painted Obama as a Muslim and yet we know Obama became a "Wright Christian" later in life (and very opportunisticly) and that McCain has never said he was a Muslim or even, in any substantsive way, highlighted Obama's relationship.
Powell can claim that, quote, "I would have difficulty with two more Republican appointments to the Surpeme Court" and yet never indicate the dishonest assault made on Roberts and Alito and how the process has been lowered to passing Democrat litmus tests.
Powell can talk about Obama being better to reach out to other countries to "repair" our standing in the world and yet he did not stand up and resign for reasons he later claimed to show why we should not have gone in to Iraq.
Yada, yada.
Powell comes across as Jim Jeffords did in 2000: claiming that long held positions in sync with his party were irreparably damaged by supposed recent events/campaign tactics/temperment etc. For these dishonest reasons that he gives, Powell does indeed come across as someone who has decided that race does cloud his opinion and decision making.
I believe that General Powell identified himself as a republican in order to secure his rise within the system. He has always been a social liberal, believing in affirmative action and abortion. He is nothing but a RINO.
Unfortunately McCain has put a lot into the idea of reaching across the aisle and getting along with, working with the opposition. This sort of paints him into a corner because you can’t win a campaign by agreeing with your opponent...”yeah, you would be a great leader” and when you simply disagree, it appears as “negative” relative to the original stance of “reaching across.” Those who loved him for his “reaching” now turn against him even if he simply fails to reach or in any way runs what would, for others, be a NORMAL campaign. This is a fundamental flaw of the working well with the other side strategy.
Clarence Thomas has more in common with American blacks than either Obama or Powell, yet he is rejected as a member of the community because of his ideology.
Not according to Kenneth Roberts.
“Powell is a racist and this proves it! He has no other reason to back Socialist Obama.”
Wrong, Powell has always been a socialist and never was a Republican except for registering very reluctlantly that way.
Powell is guilty of racial prejudice. He is influenced enough by his prejudice(s) to let it affect his thinking.
Hopefully he will be able to overcome this one day.
Should McCain win this election, our side will be better informed about Powell now.
This idea of RACE before COUNTRY is a very dangerous concept in a multiracial nation like the US. Trouble is brewing and the blame rest squarely on the black people who buy into this garbage
He is 71. I don’t see him changing much. In any case who would believe what he says?
Let’s take your statement a bit further: How many Freepers are still defending George Bush and blasted those of us who warned about him.
Bush’s accomplishments:
No border control
Ted Kennedy education bill
Farm bill
Drugs for all seniors
No government agencies eliminated
Government agencies added (like TSA)
Vilified patriots like the Minutemen
Harriet Myers for the Supreme Court
No tort reform he promised for 8 years
No comprehensive tax reform
Congratulates the Dems when they took control of Congress (thanks George!)
Ramadan lunches with Muslims
Complicit with the Dems in extending loans to unqualified applicants (Bush was very proud of this “accomplishment”)
Powell SOS
Rice SOS
US citizenship for those born in Saipan (Red Chinese now fly there for birthing)
Untold numbers of Third World refugees admitted by his administration
Now the Republicans are blamed by Joe Average Citizen for deficits, being overrun by illegals and other foreigners, endless wars of which we receive only their refugees, and now the financial crisis and failing economy. We are also staring an Obama Presidency in the face.
Sure lucky we didn’t get Al Gore in 2000 aren’t we?
From his interviews after leaving the Joint-Chiefs he's always been a center-left character. I suspect he's envious his drug dependent wife wouldn't allow HIM to be "The One" rather than Obama.
So are you going to vote for Obama, stay home or vote for some third party candidate?
Reparations are already being awarded in a behind the back sort of way.
Are you familiar with the 90,000+ black “farmers” that have received $50,000 each for not receiving the farming loans due to them? Expect much more of the same under Obama.
I noticed your handle. Please read my post #112 on this thread.
You highly over estimate his clout.
Agreed. Huge mistake.
No one familiar with Powell's liberal political views can be the slightest bit surprised at his endorsement of a liberal candidate.
Profound ignorance of Powell's public record is a logical explaination for the bewildered consternation on display.
I believe Obama will be the end of this country.
For the simple reason that his administration along with the Dem controlled Congress will ensure they never lose another election.
They will do this by, as the communists have said, “electing a new people.”
We will be flooded over the next four years with foreigners loyal to the Dems. For every real American that finally wakes up, his vote will be canceled out by 5 “New Americans” who don’t even speak English. Also, voter fraud will be ignored and encouraged even more than it is today. The Dems will have the election down to a science.
I just went door-to-door yesterday during the McCain rally here in VA.
I hope I changed a few votes from Obama to McCain.
Most people are just not informed. Many didn’t know who was running for the Senate or the House seat. They have no idea of the danger posed by an Obama administration to themselves and their children.
