McCain gives Letterman highest ratings in 3 years, crushes Leno. Put Palin on Leno pronto.

An appearance by Senator John McCain on Thursday night boosted David Letterman to his best ratings in almost three years. Mr. McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, returned to Mr. Letterman’s CBS show after several weeks of battering from the host for his abrupt decision to cancel an earlier appearance. According to initial overnight ratings, the Letterman show attracted 6.53 million viewers, well above Mr. Letterman’s usual total of about 3.5 million viewers and the best he has scored since Dec. 1, 2005. (That night’s guest was another noteworthy figure with whom the host had had an on-and-off comic feud: Oprah Winfrey.) Mr. Letterman, who usually trails Jay Leno’s “Tonight Show” by a significant margin, easily eclipsed that NBC star; Mr. Leno had 4.57 million viewers Thursday night for a show whose guests included Senator Joseph R. Biden Jr., the Democratic vice presidential nominee.

I find it hard to believe a guy who has no chance of winning and who the media gave up on weeks ago, would go on the show of a guy who depsises him and has ripped him nonstop, and then deliever the best ratings the guy has had in 3 yrs and one of his top shows ever. If McCain was really as dead as we are being led to believe there's no way he pulls these numbers. An increase, yeah, but not close to twice his usual audience.

This tells me there is still interest out there and still support out there. It also tells me if McCain got 6.5M, Sarah Palin would draw the highest ratings in late night history, any guest, any time, with the possible exceptions of Hugh Grant on Leno and Carson's final shows.

Palin will out west early this week, If I'm McCain I put her on Leno. It will draw 10M+. Leno's audience is very heartland, and compared to Dave he is actually quite fair to Republicans and conservatives. Don't forget, Leno basically launched Arnold's political career and put him in Sacramento. I think he even campaigned for him. Ant late night guy doing that for a republican is noteworthy. He's also had Jindal, Romney, Fred and Huckabee on and been very fair. Palin would allow Leno to completely crush Dave. he'd get close to zero vierwers that night. We saw how her convention speech moved polls, how well she can do. An appearance before an auidence of 10M+, a killer performance, could be very beneficial. Palin right now is one of the few things McCain has going for him and she will never be hotter and more in demand than she is now. The campaign needs to take advantage of every opportunity, especially free media like Leno since they can't compete with Obama in terms of ads. One appearance on Leno would be worth 100M+ of tv ads or more.

Do it, John.

It’s going to be interesting to see what SNL got tonight.

I think people are hungry to see both McCain and Palin unfiltered by the MSM.

Palin on Leno would be worth a million times more than an appearance on Meet the Depressed... Peggy Noonan & Co. can take a flying leap on that score...

Yeah... they will get the highest ratings they had in 10 years.... but, if they see this, they know ( The Dems, Obama ) are in trouble is so many people watched SNL just to see Sarah Palin.

probably very high. but tougher because she was on at the start and most people probably tuned out not thinking she’d be on again later. Hell, if I’m McCain I call them up and ask if they want her to host the whole show. SNL would do it for the ratings. I atcually read an interview with their head writer who was pretty even and tough on Obama, going as far to mention that the rela problem with Ayers isnt so much the terrorist angle but the far left educational agenda that Obama signed up for 100%.

From the interview with SNL writer Jim Downey:
I mean, it’s not like he doesn’t have a few things that he could point out. He could talk about that some of the things on the Obama agenda are well to the left of anything the American people have ever knowingly voted for.

and
Q. If William Ayers comes up in the next debate, could that come up on SNL?
A. Yeah, but the problem is one of the interesting things about the coverage. To me, the relevance was not what Ayers did 30, 40 years ago, it’s that he believes idiotic things. Like he believes that the purpose of education should be to create future community organizers as opposed to kids who can read, write and do math. The relevance is that Obama agreed enough with him to the extent that they gave each other foundation money and none to schools. They gave it to programs that employed imbeciles from HED schools who believe crazy things. That is relevant and worth talking about, and that’s what Ayers believes today, not 40 years ago. So no McCarthyism-like tactics on the part of the McCain campaign?

This Downey guy is more on the ball than McCain.

But right now Palin is the best thing McCain has an is the best access to free media he’ll have, or that any Republican has had probably ever. There’s not too many big audience opportunities left. Leno. Letterman. O’Reilly. Those are the big three and would draw close to 10M apiece. 30M total. I’d do it. Obama is doing a nat’l buy on 10/29 for like half an hour. I don’t know how much McCain and the RNC have left but I have to think they have enough for a similar buy. I’d put both of them on. Speak from the heart, speak to the heartland, lay it on the line and let the chips fall, but it’s too good an opportunity to pass up.

One thing about Leno; he may have a sharp tongue when delivering a joke but he doesn’t interrogate his guests mercilessly like Letterman does. Yes, I think she should go on Leno to reinforce her performance on SNL.

Leno is booked this week but something tells me they’d find a way to bump someone for the biggest ratings he’s ever gotten.

Leno has been relentless in his McPalin attacks. Macs age has been a big laugh getter. Palin as the yokel dunce was not far behind. F Leno , they don't need him at this point.

Letterman is sleazy. Sarah should never go on his show. Leno would just make some lighthearted jokes and be nice to her so she should do that show.

It’s this continuous inconsistency that should tell us that McCain/Palin are not even close to “being over”! As a matter of fact, black helicopters aside, I believe that their poll numbers are SO cooked that are and have been ahead most of this election and that the “silent majority” will show their clear voice on election day.

I’ll bet that Palin is already scheduled for Leno.

I agree; he is respectful to all of his political guests on both sides. This moment during the 2000 campaign cracked me up — Laura cracking him up:

Excuse me — it was the 2004 campaign, not 2000. But I also saw Laura and Jenna Bush on Leno just a few months ago when they co-wrote a children’s book — ot was just around the time of Jenna’s wedding. Leno was very nice, and so was the audience.
