In the close-ups I find it interesting how many red shirts I see, as that is supposedly the “Republican” color.

Well, he does have a bracelet and now a Chicago plumber named Mr. Dunn.
You should remember that I-70 is below the level of Memorial Dr. So you wouldn't see it. Also, note how there is a "line" at the rear of the crowd...it doesn't just taper off. That also indicates a boundary. The flag on the background appears to be hung from a scaffolding used to hold lights or speakers.
As much as I'd like to bust the picture, it appears legit.
In my neighborhood, red is a gang color.

“He’s taking our work. [John] McCain talks about the middle class, and then he brings up this guy as his champion. The middle class is being hurt by people exactly like him,” said Dunn, who lives in the Chicago suburb of Oak Forest and has an 8-year-old daughter.
“The biggest problem for this industry is that people like him turn up, unlicensed and working illegally, and they take work away from people who are working aboveboard.”
Dunn said he began working on Obama’s house - and its six bathrooms - four years ago and has returned roughly every six months to do such tasks as fix leaky faucets and, in one case, investigate a “bad smell.”

Troy Dunn, 44, a licensed journeyman working for Boersma Plumbing in Chicago's Kenwood neighborhood, where Obama lives, told The Post that Wurzelbacher was bad news for the profession.
While it probably is a true picture, the buildings in the back round do look a bit odd and not part of the picture.

Beginning at 5 a.m., Leonor K. Sullivan will be closed from Poplar Street to Washington Avenue, St. Louis police said Thursday. It will remain closed until the rally concludes. Memorial Drive will also be closed intermittently to handle crowds.
