A ‘tin can’ does not constitute a ‘big stick’.

That would require a carrier, a gaggle of cruisers or a boomer or two. any or all accompanied by some destroyers.

Aug. 17, 2008 | Chancellor Merkel:Georgia will become a member of NATO if it wants to — and it does want to...

true she did say this...
but strange germany blocked georgias nato membership not so long ago. so either they changed their mind 100% or it´s just trash talk from a politician. but ok both is possible.

She vetoed it before the invasion precisely to appease Russia. When the appeasement was misused by the Russians as weakness, she reversed field.

maybe you are correct on this one. but i´m having a hard time to believe that germany really wants to annoy russia “only” because of georgia, because russia is far more important to them because of the energy imports.
but lets see. time will tell

Too soon for Georgia, Ukraine to get NATO entry plan: Merkel - October 2, 2008 - SAINT PETERSBURG (AFP) — It is too soon for NATO to provide a membership action plan (MAP) to the ex-Soviet republics of Georgia and Ukraine, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said here Thursday. A NATO ministerial meeting in December that many predicted would be the occasion for the alliance to extend MAP to Georgia and Ukraine would instead be only "an initial evaluation on the road to MAP," Merkel told journalists. "The position in favour of membership as soon as possible is not the German position," Merkel said at a news conference after talks with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. The NATO summit in Bucharest last April had agreed that Georgia and Ukraine could in principle be admitted as members of the alliance, she said. But she noted that a desire to join the bloc was not the only criterion for membership. "The German position has not changed since the Bucharest summit," Merkel said.

You don’t provide entry into NATO UNTIL you have the capability and the forces to defend it.

Georgian soldiers have the capability to support our mission in Iraq, unlike our enemy Russia which helps jihadist Iran kill our soldiers in Iraq.

By the way, Iceland, a nation with no army, was a founding member of NATO.

Indeed they did.

But you don’t vote them into NATO until you have the boots ready to put on the ground.

Iceland was not in danger of invasion if they joined. Georgia is.

Since the vote is for a mutual defense, they need to figure out how they will prevent the country from being invaded by the very vote that is meant to protect it.

Hi there! - sorry for being absent for a long time. Unfortunately I tend to incline that unless something fundamental is done to Germans, they will never acept Georgia’s NATO membership... that appears to be rather obvious, at least from where we are... sad but true
