Cleveland’s Tim Russo Stops Blogging: Why?
“I received an e-mail this morning from George Nemeth of Cleveland, who blogs at Brewed Fresh Daily, alerting me to a Cleveland Plain Dealer commentary on some members of the increasingly influential political blogosphere in Ohio. One of the consequences of that piece is that Cleveland blogger Tim Russo is closing his blog, Democracy Guy.”
“So what do you blog about when the local paper reduces your net worth to the worst mistake you’ve ever made in your entire life?” Russo said in a June 6, 2006 post announcing a “requiem for his blog. “Hmmm...well...good question,” he added.. “I’ll leave that for others to decide, because I think I’m done blogging for a while. A long while.”
In article headlined “From the left or from the right: a look at Ohio’s political bloggers,” the Plain Dealer drew the following conclusion about Russo:
“Net worth: Clever and insightful, but has the sharpest tongue in the blogosphere; trying to rebuild credibility lost when he was convicted of importuning in an Internet sex sting.”

To Russo’s credit, he has not shut-off comments. Some are sympathetic while others are rather scathing.

First, the media should be ashamed of themselves for not covering this until now. The McCain-Palin supporters in my videos are not new, they are not exceptional, they are not hiding. Tim Russo from Blogger Interrupted was about to start a new radio show, “Blog Talk,” at CWRU’s college radio station.
Student Affairs office of Case Western Reserve University has temporarily suspended Russo from his radio show on WRUW pending an investigation.

Here are a few facts to keep in mind now that Russo’s video work is getting media attention:
— In 2001, Russo was convicted of a fifth-degree felony for soliciting sex from a presumed minor over the Internet. He was caught in an FBI sting covered by a local news channel.
— WRUW, the campus radio station of Case Western Reserve University, booted Russo from his volunteer show in September. Russo may sue as a result of that decision, and the potential defendants include YouTube, Facebook, the conservative publication Human Events, and Republican Ohio blogger Matt Naugle.
— YouTube removed one of Russo’s other in-your-face videos as “content inappropriate.” The site also pulled his upload of a video shot for now-Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Ohio, after a copyright claim. Vimeo yanked that video, too.
— Facebook recently canceled Russo’s account for violating its terms of service. Russo thinks he got booted because of his spat with liberal writer Matt Bai.
— And prominent Washington-based liberal blogger John Aravosis of Americablog has blacklisted Russo.
But journalists shouldn’t take at face value Internet videos that are produced by activists. They shouldn’t be duped into publicizing the work of online troublemakers like Russo, who by his own profanity-laced admission is unrepentant about pursuing an agenda at all costs.
“[I]f you watch a video from my blog and you feel a bit miffed that some whining Republican thug is on tape without their consent,” he wrote, “grow yourself a pair of onions and get the f-— over yourself. I’m fighting for my country.”
Journalists also should report where that mindset originated — with Obama himself. “I need you to go out and talk to your friends and talk to your neighbors,” Barack Obama told a crowd in Elko, Nev. “I want you to talk to them whether they are independent or whether they are Republican. I want you to argue with them and get in their face.”
Russo worked for the Clinton-Gore team in ‘96.
“When I learned how to hook up with guys on the Internet, I was managing Larry Friedman’s campaign for state representative,” writes the blogger. “Managing that campaign in 1996 was a lonely affair - underpaid, overworked and stuck in an office above a car phone installation garage. Boredom introduced me to AOL chat rooms, and ... it was like finding the perfect sex supermarket. Every variation on sex anyone can imagine was there, in stark relief, sorted by geography, city, desire, age, body shape, fetish, m4f, m4m, f4f, group ... the world’s most perfect index of sexuality.”

Russo is one of Ohio’s most infamous and influential political bloggers. He’s opinionated, educated and insightful. After years spent as a political consultant, he knows who is connected to whom and why. That 13-year-old boy was actually an FBI agent posing as a teenager online.

In order to keep Russo’s name off the campaign’s employee list, Russo says, Ryan paid him through a video production company run by a friend of Ryan’s. Russo was paid around $2,000, for “editing” (he sat next to the editing machine and explained how a few campaign commercials should be designed). Russo claims what he was really being paid for was the political consulting he provided Ryan - specifically how to spin the media after Tom Sawyer, Ryan’s Democratic opponent in the primary, leaked info about an illegal loan Ryan had received from a friend. During the campaign, while his court case continued in Cleveland, Russo lived at Ryan’s mother’s house near Youngstown and occasionally crashed at Ryan’s apartment in town.
In November 2005, he started BuckeyePolitics.net, which was funded by Gerardo Orlando of Bullz-Eye.com, a popular online men’s site. Russo was earning $2,400 a month, and thought he was getting his life back on track. Then, he introduced himself to Sherrod

Tim still lives in his parents’ house near Berea. He’s looking for work to supplement his blogging. He was recently turned down for a job managing a pizza parlor, so anything will do for now. “If this doesn’t work, I guess I’ll mow lawns at a golf course,” he says. “At least I’ll get free golf.”
