Wu Zetian, aka, Zetian Wuhu (則天皇后) was the only empress “ruler” in Chinese history. She put Machiavelli in shame in her master of power intrigue. She was brutal. She killed many royals in bloody power struggle to maintain power. She imposed the reign of terror in imperial palace, but left the rest of the country unscathed. The country operated according to established system, and was not affected by events in imperial capital.
