Those donations were made when Obama was a long shot to win the Democratic nomination--Hillary looked like a shoo-in.

Powell stabbed GWB in the back while still serving as Secretary of State, by keeping quiet and allowing the Valerie Plame/Scooter Libby business to damage the administration. But since McCain wasn't known for his loyalty to Bush either (but wasn't a member of his administration) that might make him appealing to Powell...apart from his being a war hero.

Greta had someone on Friday evening who seemed sure Powell would endorse Obama, but she was cautious.

He could also claim he supported McCain in 2007, but was turned off by the “negative campaigning”, the Palin pick, yada yada...

I'm guessing that's what will happen. When I saw the title of the thread, I thought inside information had come out saying that Powell would endorse McCain. Sorry that there wasn't more meat on that bone . . .

MCLEAN,VA 22101 SELF-EMPLOYED/SPEAKER 8/8/07 $2,300 McCain, John (R)

That's all well and good but his contribution was well before anyone gave Obama a chance against Hillary.

Just saying...

If he endorses Obama, it would be the ULTIMATE betrayal.

True. Mac and Powell served. Obama did, in theory, I guess. Thinking about it apparently is as good as actually doing it. He was ready if his country gave him a call, I guess.

The safe route makes a lot of sense for Powell. He doesn’t dump on McCain while he essentially would be saying Obama’s ok. Both camps get what they want out of him.

But the media wouldn’t know what to do with a Powell advocating for McCain. In the media’s eye, this is all set up for Obama. And, of course, Powell would’ve spoken at the RNC already, no?

I find it interesting that the McCain campaign is acting like they don’t know what’s going on. I bet they do. The One is getting set up. Of course, Powell wouldn’t be that harsh on Obama, but that’s not what Obama needs right now.

It’ll be very interesting to see how quickly the media turns on Powell should he indeed endorse McCain. Got any tax liens, General?

Yes, he donated the max to McCain for the primary season, but that was back in summer 07 before there was any serious prospect that Obama would emerge as the Democrat nominee. Anyway, as you note, it all stops in 07 and there is no indication of any donations in 08 to McCain, to the party, or to other Repub. candidates.... even though Powell had donated quite a few times to various R. candidates and committees over the previous decade.

Either he’s truly been on the fence, or he’s laying low until he comes out for his candidate for POTUS..... and I still don’t feel that I have any real idea which way he will go. I don’t know how embittered he may still be over his falling out with the Bush admin. or how much race does or doesn’t factor in for him at this point.

why would he go and dance with that idiot Kayne West on a music video..........and then endorse McCain.

I truly hope he does. However, I say let’s begin preparing for the MSM tidalwave coming......i’m going to hurl.

I would certainly hope he would endorse John Sidney McCain for president. General Powell was CJCS under both George H.W. Bush and William J. Clinton. Certainly he must realize that an Obama administration would make even the most conservative person see President Clinton as better than a President Obama. He saw what a Clinton presidency did to the military. Obama will be a magnitude worse. He will decimate our military strength and readiness to fund his give aways.

I can understand the desire of anyone Black to want to get a feeling of “affirmation” by seeing someone Black elected as POTUS. I sympathize with them on that. Barrack Hussein Obama just isn’t the one to fulfill that dream. After several years of him “leading” the nation will be in shambles and he will be hated by everyone (Black & White) because he will not and cannot deliver on his rhetorical promises and he will get us attacked again in another 911 or worse.

If General Powell cannot see this, and endorses Barrack Hussein Obama over John Sidney McCain, then in my thinking he has dishonoured the uniform he wore and the country he served. In my thinking he will be a traitor, meriting what that entails. He will forever lose any respect I held for him as a senior officer in the Army.

If he has an inclination to support Obama verses McCain, then he would do well to keep it to himself and stay publically neutral. I could deal with that. This actually would be the smartest tactic even if he supports McCain. The press will crucify General Powell if he endorses McCain. The man can’t win.

Yes, but again... if he endorses McCain, 98% of his fellow race will accuse him of betraying his race.

I am actually thinking he might just say something vague and punt. If he were planning some kind of full throated partisan endorsement, it’d be a rally with Obama (or McCain) present.

I doubt Powell cares about being Sec. of Defense—he’s 71, just a few months younger than McCain, and has already been Sec. of State, which is the most prestigious cabinet position. Obama would probably try to downsize the military—we won’t need so many troops after he makes all the anti-American dictators love us.

Why has McCain’s camp already said it will be embarrassing. Why would he do this if they are friends? Better not say anything than to stab a friend in the back.

Probably right. My guess is that he didn’t run in 1996 or 2000 because he would have been vilified as a race traitor, just like Justice Thomas. That’s what his wife was afraid of, not his getting killed by a stray kluxer.
