On the streets of Orange County suburbs, there's a silent war brewing over a proposition that would change the state's constitution to ban gay marriage.
The battles are taking place in the front yards and public right-of-ways from Buena Park to Mission Viejo, where those on both sides are reporting a multitude of Prop. 8 signs slashed, stolen, and tagged.
Supporters of the ban, who've kept track of the vandalism, say the climate of sign vandalism is among the worst they've seen, even worse than when a similar gay marriage ban was proposed in 2000. Reports have come in from Santa Ana, Yorba Linda, Huntington Beach, Fountain Valley and Irvine.
The word "biggot" was scrawled on a sign in Huntington Beach and dog poop left on door mats in Mission Viejo and Orange. One man in Fountain Valley became so frustrated that he constructed his own, sturdier sign on his front lawn.
"This is just the tip of the iceberg," said Michael Erickson, who has started tallying the reports and is the "Yes on 8" grassroots coordinator for the Huntington Beach area.
Those opposed to the ban don't keep track of vandalism to their signs, said Kathleen Campisano, field manager for "No on 8'' in Long Beach and Orange County. But Campisano, whose group has distributed 500 signs in the county, said she's sure it's happening on both sides of the campaign.
"I think it's a matter of course that both sides are going to have signs removed because it's an issue that people care about a lot,'' she said. "Our main message is about fair-minded people being fair and not treating people differently. It goes without saying that our folks would not bother other people's yard signs."

What! No San Clemente? No San Juan Capistrano Beach? No Dana Point?
Caught the kids from across the street messing with my Prop 8 and McCain/Palin signs last night. They scooted just as soon as the light was turned on - just like rats.
Yep, and “they came for the signs”, and no one dared say a thing against the brownshirters ‘cuz.. well, then they’d be targeted, too. This kind of “ruckus” has been going on in the SF Bay area for decades. You know... the place which is the model for the Pelosi/Obama Whitehouse & Congress?
Stick around...in a few years you won’t even consider putting a sign out front for fear of some kind of harm befalling your racist, evil “right-wing” household.
The hard left is just warming up.
The left has become ultra-reliant on the 'They do it too' defense. I have heard it innumerable times this election year. Truly the party of the infantile.
My sign was stolen on Monday.
I replaced it on Tuesday. I live in Ontario btw.
In Oceanside (San Diego County) I haven’t seen any sign vandalism for Yes on 8 Or McCain/Palin. Seeing as many Mc/P as O/B bumper stickers.
There isn’t a group of people more hostile to democracy or more intent on stripping away basic freedoms than homosexual activists.
