The analogy might ring truer if 0bama was 8 points down, instead of 8 points up.
McCain is the definite underdog. I wasn’t old enough in 1980 to really know what was going on...I guess the Conventional Wisdom said Carter would win?
I was only 9 in 1980, but by that point in my life I actually was into politics. My dad had died a year earlier and I can’t remeber who or why, but someone gave me book on the Presidents called the Glorious Burden to cheer me up. I still have it today Each chapter is broken down by the year of the election. So I was very much into that election.
I remember alot of the news people were saying things like it’s an uphill battle for Reagan and crap like that. The polls were tight but with a small Carter lead. Where I lived though (Walnut CA about 30 miles east of LA), it was all about Reagan. Reagan signs were everywhere. I was in the fourth grade and Reagan won a mock election in my class I think Reagan’s count was about 22 or 23 and Carter only had 2 and Anderson 1. Then Reagan won in a landslide
So I guess in a close race, you can get the feeling where the race is headed by checking out around you. Who has more signs, bumperstickers and things like that.
