I look forward to the day when people can get a single DNA test that gives them a complete profile of known genetic risks, and comparative risks with a spouse.
There are a lot of people who if they know of a problem in themselves and/or their spouse, would voluntarily not make children. But it wouldn’t prevent them from adopting. So they not only don’t harm, they help. And people with such caring would likely make good parents.
In addition, a DNA disease profile could be of great help if shared with the family doctor, as a “be on the lookout” warning. This would strongly improve the odds of finding a problem early, and even modifying behavior to avoid the problem in the first place.
However, there would have to be a strong prohibition against employers or insurance companies misusing this information, because it would be hard for them not to.
