Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby Poll: Obama 49%, McCain 44%
Obama gains a bit heading into the final presidential debate
UTICA, New York - Democrat Barack Obama maintained his small edge over Republican John McCain Wednesday, gaining slightly among independent voters heading into last night's final presidential debate, the latest Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby telephone tracking poll shows.
This latest report came out of the field just hours before the debate began.
Obama's edge grew to 5.5 points over McCain today, up from a 3.8 point advantage in yesterday's report. Each day's report includes a three-day rolling average of likely voters nationwide. Since the beginning of the Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby tracking poll reports on Oct. 6, 2008, Obama has always led. His lead had been as small as 1.9 points and as large as 6.2 points.
Compared to yesterday, McCain lost 0.9 points, while Obama gained 0.8 points.
The tracking poll included a sample of 1,208 likely voters collected over the previous three 24-hour periods spanning four calendar days - approximately 400 per 24-hour period from Oct. 12-15, 2008. The poll was conducted by live telephone operators in Zogby's in-house call center in Upstate New York and carries a margin of error of +/- 2.9 percentage points.
Obama leads among independents, 49% to 35%, a gain over yesterday, where the rolling average had him ahead among that demographic group by 8 points. The rest of the independent voters - 16% - were either undecided or favored another candidate. Both candidates continue to perform well among their respective party members.

The two candidates have been battling to a near tie each day among men, and today Obama holds a slight two-point advantage. McCain led in this group yesterday, but only by one point. Among women, Obama leads by eight points, 51% to 43%.
Obama has captured 85% of the support of liberal voters, but John McCain is only winning 74% of conservative voters. Obama wins 20% of the conservative vote in this latest tracking poll. Moderates favor Obama by a two-to-one margin.
Daily Tracking Continues
This daily tracking telephone poll will continue each day until the Nov. 4 election. With each new day of responses that are folded into the poll, the oldest third of the survey is removed, so the poll "tracks" changes in voter attitudes following events and developments in the race. McCain is not out of this race people. Don’t let anyone tell you even yourself that he is.
I just find it hard to believe that Obama is winning 20% of conservatives. If that is true then tonight’s debate was the clearest contrast yet between the two, so maybe this and ads going forward can bring some back to the fold.
It looks like the women are going to put in the communist if this poll even close to accurate.
Hussein Obamacorn cannot win with a 5 point lead. And the ‘RATS know that.
Vote McCain!
I'll take the under and bet Zogby 10,000 bucks.
If Obama is up 5 winning 20% of “conservatives”, then he is really behind and McCain will win this thing.
Lots of crying liberals when the Sun rises on November 5th!!!
Easily winnable for McCain. People (not political junkies like us) are just now just taking a hard look at the race.
BTW...Is anyone making a list of the traitors on the Right who went south on us lately?
Will
Kristol
Parker.
We’re going to need to remember their names.
There is no frakin’ way that is possible. You simply can NOT have any semblence of conservative values and vote for a socialist. Then again they could be Chris Buckley RINOs.
read Ann Coulters column today. she sites October polls going back to Carter. ALL were way off. Very interesting.
That 20% “conservative vote” are those liberal jokers who tell the “pollsters” that they “voted for Bush and have a son in Iraq.” Everyone is fooling themselves with these “polls.”
don’t forget the PUMA voters. They are still mad at the DNC and Obama for dissing Hillary.
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I miss her. lol.
“If Obama is up 5 winning 20% of conservatives, then he is really behind and McCain will win this thing.”
Agreed. And if that 20% number is even remotely accurate now, it certainly won’t be on 4 Nov. McCain did a great job tonight tying Obama to tax increases and a larger government.
“The RNC internal polls have McCain/Palin 2%-4% ahead nationally!”
Source? :)
“Kristol, Will, Parker”
Can we add David Brooks to this list?
It wouldn't be hard to believe if you spend any time on this forum. Lots of so-called 'conservatives' are openly rooting for Obama.
It was posted here last night. Along with McCain/Palin being up +2 in PA.
