Obama in the primaries was all about keeping “big money out of politics” and took up a pledge with McCain to only accept public dollars, McCain was locked into that, Obama backed out and broke his pledge.

He would be limited by what he drew from the FEC if he took it. By not taking it, he gambles not raising as much money, but also does not have a limit on spending for campaign.
