It looks like a 8 because this is a very poor probably scanned copy. You can barely make out the word December either. Look at the E’s in December, you can hardly tell what they are.
Also the copy posted here today may be the original and the copy here a few days back may be bad scanned copies.

If you blow up the original, as I just did, the "6" in "6:36 AM" also looks like an "8". No reason to have doctored that. I agree with your "poor quality scan" hypothesis.

Yep. I do OCR scanning all the time. This looks exactly like the kind of errors that frequently occur.
