I think that we will have to agree to disagree on this one. We would have to debate the life and times of the average peasant and who did and who did not pay taxes. I don't think our time is worth the effort, given that there are so many undecideds to work on.

Perhaps so. It appeared to me that the point of the story was that the tax collector was taxing people into poverty — thus that the taxes were the CAUSE of the poverty, and would not stop due to poverty. It is because of this dynamic that the Sheriff of Nottingham was hated by the poor. If he hadn’t been collecting taxes from everyone, why would everyone hate him?
Robin Hood was therefore fighting against unjust taxation and an overburdensome government.
