Kid Poll Correct for 40 Years Picks Obama
Tuesday, October 14, 2008 5:22 PM
The votes are in and student voters have spoken: Democratic nominee Senator Barack Obama is the winner of the 2008 Scholastic Election Poll, with 57% of the vote over Republican contender Senator John McCain, who received 39% of the student vote. The poll, conducted every four years through Scholastic classroom magazines like Scholastic News® and Junior Scholastic® and online at Scholastic News Online (www.scholastic.com/news), is an educational activity that gives children too young to go to the polls themselves the opportunity to cast their vote for President. A quarter of a million students from across the country participated in the Scholastic Election Poll.
Since 1940, the results of the student vote in the Scholastic Election Poll (online voting was added in 2000) have mirrored the outcome of the general election, except twice: in 1948 when students chose Thomas E. Dewey over Harry S. Truman and in 1960 when more students voted for Richard M. Nixon than John F. Kennedy. In 2000, student voters chose George W. Bush, mirroring the Electoral College result but not the result of the popular vote.

Boo-hoo-hoo.
I don’t know, this market crash has caused all these polls to make no sense. Believe it or not, this is still early. If the market behaves itself the next 5 days, all bets are off.
Sorry. Your streak has ended, kids.
Well, the Lakers went to the Finals this year. Every time the LA Lakers have gone to the Finals, the Republicans have won the White House.
That’s good enough for me.
Well let’s make sure they’re wrong once every 40 years. I hope so.
They will be wrong this election.
The indoctrination of the teachers in college has finally paid off. Sigh.
LOL! No mention about 1960 when the kids picked Nixon and how Nixon was robbed by Joe Kennedy in WV and, where else, Chicago.
The kiddies will be wrong this year.
All this crap is out the window this year. This is not just another election. This is the first time we’ve had a muslim being supported by the Communists, the Kollege Kiddies and the “national media” running for president. The adults will get it straight for their little young skulls full of mush.
Don’t they say every time that they have been right in every election? I distinctly remember that they picked Bush over Clinton in 1992.
When I first heard about this poll a few weeks ago, I heard that you could vote online. I was curious and tried to vote to see how difficult it would be to cheat. I was able to vote for McCain quite easily. It didn’t ask for a school or anything, just a grade. I wonder how many others did this. Was this number of votes out of line with the history of the poll?
And I’m sorry that I cheated. Smack me.
Oh, for the love of Whoever, is there no end to all these phony polls trying to predict who will win and lose?
What is this, psychological warfare?
Republicans, conservatives, anti-Obamatons: go out and VOTE! Don’t be bullied by the drumbeat of the spoon-clangers in the media demanding to have their 60s moment!
I thought that was the weekly reader pole.
What does the Washington and Lee University Poll say?
The children were probably not propagandized for prior democrat nominees like they were this year.
That gave me a good laugh. :-)
Obama is also the closest thing to a cartoon character ever to run for President. To kids, he's as "cool" as The Joker.
Yeah so this poll picked W over Lurch? Riiiigght...
I can’t understand why any of us are getting upset or defensive about a bunch of little kids voting in a poll that means nothing.
