[Mark Steyn's commentary]
Senator Obama famously shrugged off William Ayers as just a guy in his neighborhood. In a way, that's right. The Ayers/Obama connection isn't about the Senator's social life, it's about where he lives, politically speaking. Ayers' Weather Underground grew out of "Students For A Democratic Society", as did ACORN. Today, Ayers and his fellow "educators" are engaged with considerable success in radicalizing the next generation of Americans. But, if that doesn't work, Acorn has a fallback strategy.

Why haven’t those who submitted these been arrested?

I wonder what the actual vote count effect is with these fraudulent voter registrations.

By that I mean, suppose ACORN registers 20,000 fake voters. The voters simply do not exist to actually vote and effect election results, unless some number of people with fake IDs stand ready to cast fraudulent votes in the name of the 20,000 fraudulent registered voters. Are we supposing that in each case of voter registration fraud, someone with a Daffy Duck ID is going to show up to cast a vote?

ACORN should have to pay for the extra cost to election boards for checking all those fraudulent applications.

Every state governor should pursue R.I.C.O. charges against ACORN since the federal government doesn’t enforce the laws any more.

What is the purpose of turning in thousands of fraudulent registrattions? For it to work someone has to go in and vote 73 times. In order to do this there has to be a record in ACORN’s files of what name was registered in each precinct and how many times so some guy can spend election day going from precinct to precinct voting using different names.

A criminal investigation will find this. ACORN knows this and that’s why they’re talking point is “registering isn’t fraud”. They know they’re caught.

Back in 2004 I was the media rep for Chillicothe Ohio. Chillicothe was THE bellwether town for Ohio. Everyone knew that as Ohio went so went the presidency. Both campaigns agreed that as Chillicothe went so went Ohio.

Chillicothe was inundated with media from all over the world. And as the Bush campaign rep I was assigned to deal with them.

But about 4 weeks before the election I got a call from the Bush Headquarters in Columbus. They wanted me to go to the next county (Pike County)and get a list of all the new voters registered by ACORN. There were over a thouand of them. The Columbus office of the Bush campaign had a local attorney go with me to make sure they gave me the list.

There were a thousand fake names registered to vote in Pike County. All over the state the number exceeded 250 thousand fake names that had been registered to vote.

Rove was quite concerned that they would send in people to go to each of these precincts and vote the fake names.

On the night before the election several thousand lawyers were flown in to Ohio. They were sent to each precinct that had fake registrations to contest if anyone tried to vote those names.

Each of these lawyers had cell phone and if they called the assigned number Federal Marshall’s were to be dispatched immediately to the polling place to charge the person trying to vote the fake name. The lawyers did not have to say a word... just push the button to make the call. If the number rang, marshalls were on the way.

On election Day I got a call about noon from Bush headquarters in Columbus. As of noon not a single one of the fake names had been voted. The next call came at 5:00PM not a single person had tried to vote a single one of those 250 thousand fake names.

Late on election night with Bush in the lead and few votes still out, Kerry still refused to concede. He claimed that there were 250 thousand Ohio votes that had somehow not been counted.

The next morning Kerry called all 88 Ohio boards of elections and was told that his missing 250 thousand voters were all fake. It was then that Kerry gave up.

The question in my mind is what as ACORN trying to accomplish. They were hiring people and paying them 10 dollars for every person they registered. And to find a valid person to register takes about 4 hours. They would be making $2.50 an hour. Few would work for such wages. But by filling in fake names some ACORN employees were turning in a 100 fake registration forms every day letting them make $1,000.00 dollars a day.

Now ACORN is paying them 8 dollars an hour but they have to meet a quota to keep their job. And the only way to make the quota is to turn in fake names.

It is hard to escape the conclusion that ACORN is just ripping off the Obama and the Democratic party. Maybe by adding lots of fake Democrats to the voter lists they figure they can make the polls look better for Obama.

It is hard to see an upside for the Democrats and Obama. They must have known after 2004 that they were going to be exposed quickly.

All I know is that someone or some entity paid ACORN over 3 million dollars in 2004 to register 250 thousand fake names that did not vote in 2004.

The funny thing is Kerry must have believed they were legit. And since Bush only registered 80 thousand new voters Kerry was sure he had Ohio in the bag. The problem for Kerry was that Bush’s registrations were all valid and voted and Kerry’s were all fake and didn’t vote.

I have often wondered if when the thousands of lawyers showed up at the precincts ready to call federal marshalls, an attempt to vote those illegal names was called off.

Kerry thought they voted. But they did not.
