“LOL. How many registered Dems would there be, if they had to pay to join the party?”

I remember when I was a student in Montreal, the “young liberals” paid for mine (I was young and stupid, but I don’t think I voted either). I’m sure it came out of election funding. Acorn would pay for Dems to be sure.

I'll see your Helen and Hillary, and raise you an Elizabeth.

Elizabeth May, Green Party leader.

You haven’t seen a photo or video of Stephane Dion — hint — he’s related to that Vegas-based tranny named Celine and he’s the very definition of milktoast, I mean milquetoast mes amis.

You had to post her photo, didn’t you. Helen Thomas and Albright in the making. Urg. She even makes Cankles look less dumpy.

Why would we worry about birth certificates?

Stephane Dion, the Liberal Leader, is a Citizen of France.

No joke.

She still is, isn’t she? Did she give it up?

She was born in Haiti, and is probably still a citizen there.

The GG rightfully had to give up her French citizenship. Only holds Canadian to the best of my knowledge. If she’s the Queen’s rep, she should have a single allegience. Why they still have this ceremonial post since we repatriated our constitution I don’t know...

Good point.

I'm no expert, but who would the Prime Minister go to to dissolve the government, if GG didn't exist? What do other parliaments do?

The queen is still the Head of State — not the Prime Minister. Her role as Queen of Canada is entirely separate to her role as Queen of the United Kingdom.

The Governor General is her representative in Canada, because she can’t be in Canada all the time.

You may recall that it was the queen that Brian Mulroney went to, back when he wanted to bring in the GST. He had been defeated in the Senate, and it wasn’t going to happen. (This is as it should be: the Senate said “no” for perfectly good Constitutional reasons). So what did Mulroney do?

On his knees he went to the queen to seek “special powers” to appoint extra Senators under emergency measures. The Queen, not knowing any better, said “yes”. To a Nation’s disgust.

Thank you for this post.I am in BC and had the great pleasure to shake PMSH(Harper)’s hand last night at his rallye in West Vancouver. He was just great in his peech funny and strong. The press has done an incredible job of hiding how good he is at campaign speeches. My voting age kids came and they were excited too. So with prayers and hope all day....

“Sometimes I honestly wish we had a qusi-parliamentary system here.”

I think it’s a terrible system, myself. As a dual-citizen, I’ve participated in 20 years of voting in Canada. Voters don’t get to elect the PM. He/She is selected by the party at the party convention. And the Senate is a useless bunch, typically patronage appointments, again, not elected by the people.

The one part I do like is that a crappy gov’t can be tossed out with a no-confidence vote at any time, while in the US, we have to suffer with our mistakes for 4-years.

But I’m through with the Canada election process... I can’t vote any more because I’m no longer a resident. I could have fudged the absentee voting registration form, but that would lower my standards to ACORN levels.... Good luck tonight...GO Conservatives!

The Reform Party used to be a libertarian party out of Alberta. What we have today is the reverse of the situation from 1993 to 2004. Then the Liberals saw the Right split its vote three ways. Depending on how low the Liberals poll, the Conservatives could win a majority with as little as 38% of the vote. There are three leftist parties in Canada but one of them is regional (Quebec only) and one is just plain nutty socialist even for Canadian voters. That leaves the long ruling Liberals as the main alternative.
