CBS ‘Early Show’ Uses Republican to Call Palin a ‘Huge Mistake’
Newsbusters ^ | October 13, 2008 | By Kyle Drennen

David Frum, CBS On Monday’s CBS Early Show, co-host Harry Smith discussed the presidential campaign with former Bush speech writer David Frum and declared: "There is growing concern among some Republicans about McCain's campaign. They're calling on him to stabilize it." Later in the segment, Smith asked Frum point blank: "Was Sarah Palin a mistake?" Frum replied: "I think Sarah Palin was a huge mistake...Americans can be pretty jokey about their government when times are good, but when times are bad, they want to know do -- can you do the job? And when you have a candidate who so obviously has never thought about any of the issues that are going to be important to the next administration and whose knowledge is so shallow, it makes people -- it doesn't just make people offended, it makes them afraid."

Just prior to asking Frum about Palin, Smith asked: "We're talking about the Gallup numbers, the Post has Obama up by ten points. Three weeks to go. Is it too late for John McCain to make substantial changes and literally save his campaign?" Part of Frum’s response to that question included: "The McCain campaign right now is running a campaign aimed at getting excited the last -- the core 30% of the country that supports the Republican Party, our base, but you don't win elections on your base. You win elections, but with a broad strategy. And above all, when you run an election like this aimed at your base you risk demoralizing and offending a lot of people who are needed by a Norm Coleman or an Elizabeth Dole." Story Continues Below Ad ↓

While the Early Show routinely has on liberal political analysts, like Michael Crowley from the New Republic, when the show finally has on a Republican to discuss the race he attacks conservatives and calls them offensive and scary.

I keep asking myself when I see stuff like this from him, from Christopher Buckley, George Will, David Brooks, etc. -- who is it that they think they're talking to? And why? Do they think they're speaking for someone? Or to sway someone? I understand someone getting antsy or annoyed and voting a certain way -- but I don't get the public denunciations, or the reason why people who consider themselves conservatives have to join in the liberal two minutes of hate toward Sarah Palin. Doesn't this seem like it hurts the Republican cause? Doesn't it seem like a way of indirectly supporting Obama? What am I not getting?

My view, for what it's worth, re Palin is that she's one of the few reasons why McCain is anywhere in this campaign. No Palin, and I think McCain's way down -- which is why the liberal establishment is in such a blood-fever to "get" her. If they get it, how come our guys don't?

This is the Canadian bloke who decided that he had the authority a while back to read people out of the conservative movement. I read his book “Dead Right.” Not particularly insightful, or accurate. The man is a downer, and doesn’t qualify as a conservative by the standards that most conservatives apply.

Frum is a retard. He and his pantywaist, merlot sipping buddies Kathleen Parker and David Brooks and Rich Lowry speak only for the pantywaist, merlot sipping subset of girly republicans.

Lowry has been fine this election cycle. Leave him out of this.

Frum is a prostitute who wants to be invited to Georgetown cocktail parties. Period.

And he should be fired from National Review.

Their bosses are the MSM..that’s where they get their paychecks. These guys are just hired hands who sit up for their dinner.

You are absolutely correct, without Palin the McCain campaign would have dried up and blown away. The only reason he has a shot now is because of Palin.

I agree with you puplius1. As far as I am concerned David Frum is pretty "jokey". McCain would be nowhere without Sarah Palin. Sarah is the only thing most of us like abuot this ticket.

McCain is the mistake.

Yep. Palin merely magnifies it by thinking and acting as a conservative instead of in lockstep liberal bi-partisanship style like McCain.

I think these are people who called themselves ‘conservatives’ when it was politically expedient. David Brooks career took off as the opposing conservative on PBS, David Frum got a job with the then popular George Bush. Chris Buckley is a writer, not his dad and, again made money on being politically incorrect (”Thank you for Smoking”).

My theory is that they are saying these things now for the same reason: To stand out as renegades who are against the Republican ticket. Yawn.
