But evidently there is no formal step where a candidate for the presidency must provide proof of citizenship to an agency of the federal government, before entering the race. All the disputes surrounding Obama seem to be among private citizens, and there is no government agency which has documents provided by Obama that would end the dispute - apparently.
Seems people just declare and run for president, unless it is known for certain that they are not natural born citizens, such as with Arnold or Henry Kissinger.
