Poll Shows Latinos Overwhelmingly Go for Obama
New Mexico Politics ^ | 10/11/08 | staff

A new poll by Latino Decisions of 1,600 registered Latino voters in New Mexico, Colorado, Florida and Nevada shows those polled in three of the states overwhelmingly support Barack Obama. Only in Florida do voters say they prefer John McCain; in the other three states, Barack Obama leads by at least forty points.

"The Latino vote will be critical in the Southwest and Florida, and results of this poll show very clearly that Latinos may well provide Sen. Barack Obama with the margin of victory," said Matt Barreto in the polling memo. Barreto is a University of Washington professor of political science and was a co-partner on the research.

In New Mexico, Obama leads 69 percent to 26 percent over McCain when voters are pushed. Without leaners, Obama leads 67 percent to 23 percent.

Trendlines from the August poll.

Barack Obama (D): 69% (68) John McCain (R): 26% (22)

McCain has improved, but not nearly enough.

According to exit polling from 2004 provided with the poll, John Kerry only won 56 percent of the Latino vote as compared to 44 percent of the vote for George W. Bush.

A large advantage among Latinos is important in New Mexico, perhaps more than any other state in the nation. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, an estimate of the population in 2006 said "Persons of Hispanic or Latino origin" made up 44 percent of New Mexico's population. This is more than any other race.

Well, I guess McCain's ad in spanish blasting the Obama for killing his amnesty plan is really bearing fruit.

I bet McCain has more than 26%. So much for his pro amnesty bs.
Sure pays off.

The odds are stacked against any conservative, since the spanish media is overwhelmingly liberal and pro-democrat. It honestly sickens me to see the news, which I avoid.
Still, speaking to some hispanic friends here, they are more conservative, and I have a feeling that they might decide to cast a vote for America, rather than against America.

Obama has been blasting McCain with lies on spanish television stations tying him with Rush Limbaugh. Hopefully McCain fights back and starts to connect with Latinos.

A 40%+ solid block of latinos will be necessary for any current and future governing majority.

This is why the party is in trouble for the future. A failure to do anything substantive on illegal aliens has led to an exploding population of legal young latinos. Those people will tend to go Democrat or to a party that promises them lots of goodies. Given that the last two presentational elections were very close (271 and 286 EVs for the winner), I think its clear that millions of new voters who tend to lean Dem is a problem. It’ll sure mean that we will see more RINO republicans as our standard bearers.

Hmm, I wonder how many illegals are registered. It would be difficult to ferret those out when I see on TV that these fake registrations they are catching are because they have several applications stacked one on top of the other with all the same handwriting, or due to a non-existant address. Those measures are not going to catch illegal voters.

Yea, it’s hard for me to believe a man who represents a state in the south west region (or the immediate area) and has been pro amnesty is only getting 26% of Latino voters while Bush got 44%.

I am not completely versed in racial politics in the US but aren’t there a lot of tensions generally between the latino and the african american communities. These numbers would seem to not reflect at all any of these tensions that are certainly present in the big cities anyway.

Of course they do. With the Democrats, they get to cross the border and immediate cut into line in front of long time citizens for jobs, school, and business contracts. They know the Democrats will give them other people’s money, and they get to stick it to the gringos.

All good, My Friends.

Florida Latinos are made up primarily of Puerto Ricans and Cubans. I think that explains why they are going for McCain.

I personally think this article is full of crap. Where I work is a majority of Mexican-American employees. Out of the 40+ that I have spoken to, 38 plan to vote for McCain. Most the Mexicans are just as tired of the illegal Mexican people coming up from south of the border than the rest of us are. Out of the 38 I talked to, 31 have come to country legally. They went through the hoops and red tape and became citizens and are fiercely proud of it. The other seven were born here and are sick of having the illegals ruin it for the legals. Surprisingly, none of the people I talked to is for giving the illegals anything. They said we worked for it, so should they.
After taking this nonscientific poll, I am very proud of all these guys and their families. By the way, they are all registered Republicans and wouldn't think of voting for Obama and the criminals in the DNC.

This is correct. In my old neighborhood, South L.A. it was real bad, but Latinos & blacks are often in agreement when it comes to politics & the economy. The political differences lie in some of the social issues (especially abortion). If McCain/Palin can get onto the subject of abortion & gay marriage...those poll numbers will go up.

They probably polled the illegal aliens who will certainly be voting in Richardson’s New Mexico.

No internals.

“Registered voters were identified using the complete voter registration databases for each state, and then merged with a Spanish-surname list from the U.S. Census. Phone calls were then randomly made to the phone list of registered voters.”

Living in Los Angeles and sometimes taking public transpo through LAC? Based on actual situations on the subway, I can attest that 99% of latinos don;t like blacks..period.

Most of the latinos I know have spoken honestly on how they perceive blacks: lazy bums on welfare. No, those are not my words. My latino neighbors in L.A. flat out think they’re lazy. BUT the bad part is they will still vote Dumbocrat..thank you Mayor Villa-la-Raza.
