'Reasonable gun control' putting a lot at stake
The Evansville Courier ^ | October 9, 2008 | JIM TOMES

I am compelled to correct notions espoused by Chuck Bauer's Community comment Monday claiming Barack Obama will protect gun rights.

Bauer writes, "Barack Obama will preserve our right to bear arms for hunting, sport shooting and home defense and respect our tradition of gun ownership."

Bauer is representative of so many gun owners in this country in the fact that they haven't the slightest idea of the intent of the Second Amendment and the purpose for which George Mason and Patrick Henry insisted that it be included in the Bill of Rights.

This country had just defeated the British Army and won American independence. That victory was due largely because of the firearms the Americans possessed.

The Founders understood the significance of having the finest firearms available for personal ownership to defend against threats, foreign or domestic.

It was not about goose or duck hunting. It was not about sportsmen and gun clubs. Nor was it even about home defense.

It was about a citizenry having firearms equivalent to that of a standing army. Not shotguns or fowlers, not even handguns. Those types of guns for private ownership are secondary benefits of the Second Amendment.

Mason, who authored the Virginia Declaration of Independence, intended for citizens to own military-style rifles for defense. He was not concerned about a threat from a long- eared rabbit or a duck or squirrel.

The danger the Second Amendment faces come from people who have no comprehension of what's at stake.

Hunters, in large, part are willing to allow gun control laws to prohibit handguns, semiautomatic rifles or any firearms that have been deemed by a present day politician as "non sporting."

Just so they don't take away their shotguns.

Obama supported a complete ban on handgun ownership in an Illinois survey dated Sept. 9, 1996. In the Illinois General Assembly, he voted against SB 2165 in 2004, which would have allowed using a gun in home defense. And it's also been reported he supported a 500 percent tax increase on ammo and guns. He's also supported gun registration and opposes license to carry.

Organizations such as The American Hunter and Shooters Association and others are wolves in sheep's clothing. They, too, support most gun control measures and are able to lure the unsuspecting hunter and sportsman into contributing money that will eventually go to elect gun control advocates such as Obama. The so-called "reasonable gun control" measures will take us all to the day when the last single-shot shotgun that grandpa owned is cut into pieces.

On the Second Amendment, Don’t Believe Obama!

IMHO, we could use a grass roots letter to the editor campaign for all the Jim Zumbos and Chuck Bauers out there.

Whenever I hear anyone talking about a "compromise" on gun controls, I silently ask myself how they would feel about a "reasonable compromise" on free speech. Or self-incrimination. Or the right to a jury trial. You know, all the other rights delineated in the Bill of Rights.

How can a group of people demand the right to murder unborn children under some imaginary "right" barely even suggested in the Constitution, while qualifying the right to keep and bear arms, which is clearly spelled out in the same document?

We also need to remind them that Obama thought that the Washington, DC gun ban was “reasonable” too.

The left know damn well how difficult and dangerous it would be to take over the nation with all of those guns in the hands of actual Americans. Can you blame them for wanting to repeal—that is, ignore— the 2nd amendment??!! Why do you think the sale of guns has skyrocketed over the past months?

Oh, I know! I know! What is "cognitive dissonance"?

When people are constantly barraged with reports of one crisis after another, many respond by withdrawing from reality. Psychologists call the condition "cognitive dissonance," or "cognitive disassociation."

From the article: "...the significance of having the finest firearms available ..."

I don't see the word "firearms" in the Second Amendment at all. It protects the right to keep and bear "arms". ALL OF THEM.

Obama wants “reasonable spach control” as well.

Won’t get that without first disarming the citizens.

reasonable is just like “for the children”

sorry Obama there is nothing reasonable about your “hunters only” or collectivist view of the second amendment.

remember Obama was on of THOSE law professors pushing the collectivist 2nd amendment BS.

Obama is running commercials now every hour on the hour on radio and TV.

What is "cognitive dissonance"?

That is correct. We would also have accepted "What is hypocrisy?" Or "Who are the biggest lying freakin' hypocrites on God's greed earth?"

Barack Obama will preserve our right to bear arms for hunting, sport shooting and home defense and respect our tradition of gun ownership.

The right to bear arms is not, was never, and will never be about ‘hunting, sport shooting and home defense.’ It was included in the Bill of Rights as an unalienable right endowed by the Creator upon all men, and as a safeguard of those unalienable rights against the illegal encroachment of illegitimate government maneuvering and the excesses of the power-hungry - in fact, the sort of encroachment which is precisely what Obama and his Democrat/Marxist supporters have in mind.

When does hunting season start? Is it on November 4th or do we have to wait until January 20th?

Where’s that cover of Newsweek (or whatever) with Sarah Palin smiling while holding a gun over her shoulder?

Litmus test: if someone can’t immediately & correctly explain what kind of gun she has (in the most general sense) and whether she’s holding it safely, they have absolutely no business saying anything about “reasonable restrictions” on guns.
