PHILADELPHIA (AFP) — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on Saturday thanked his Republican rival John McCain for urging supporters to be respectful and stop hurling abuse at Obama at his rallies.

"Now, I want to acknowledge that Senator McCain tried to tone down the rhetoric yesterday in his town hall meeting and I appreciate his reminder that we can disagree while still being respectful of each other," Obama said.

You just gave him the election, John, and took away your key campaign issue: HIS CHARACTER.

Never has there been a politician this out of step with his own party, this naive, or this s--- stupid. Never.

Why did this jack ass even run?

Obama may thank him, but were it not for Palin, I’d once again decide to avoid the polls. Gads, McCain, get a CLUE, will you?? You were a fighter pilot, dammit. What happened to that positional awareness and aggressiveness?

Obama is the ultimately insultable empty suit.

Obama needs a clue to get a clue.

Obama is nature’s ultimate vacuum.

Why was Biden in Pa the other day with Hillary? If O-B were really up nationally by 7 points, Pa would not even be in play.

I also want to thank John McCain for handing over the election without a fight...thanks John.

There have been some recent polls that showed while people tended to distrust Obama more than McCain on telling the whole truth, they also by a rather large margin think that McCain is running the more "negative" campaign.

IF McCain and the campaign continue to bring up the valid open questions about some of his associations, ACORN etc., then McCain being "respectful" to Obama in public may make certain people pay more attention to certain things and ask themselves questions. Remember that McCain cannot fight in this election with quite the same type of rhetoric that we on FreeRepublic may choose if he wants any chance.

Sorry. I have no respect for liars, charlatans and undercover-marxists. We will have to agree to disagree disrespectfully. McCain, wake up and smell the People’s-Republic-of-Obama coffee.

McCain on Friday called on his backers to tone it down, after crowds at his rallies have become increasing inflammatory shouting out "terrorist" and "liar" when Obama is mentioned. At one Florida rally, someone even shouted "kill him."

The US Secret Service said it was investigating the alleged death threat.

These are Democrat plants trying to make us look bad.  I'm glad McCain said something.  We are not the party of Kos and DU!

Negative campaign? You should hear some of the dirty commercials that BHO is running here in Ohio. I’ve never heard/seen anything like them.

I agree with the disgust on this forum about McCain, but how can we be shocked or even angered by it really? All true conservatives here knew this when McCain won the primary. All we can do is show up and vote against Obama, we are not ever going to change McCain.

It doesn’t matter. It’s over, I’m sorry to say.

Take off your quitter hat for a moment and look at all the poll internals. They are way off.

Yes Obama wants his supporters to get in the face of Independents and Republicans, and Obama said, “If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun,” Obama said in Philadelphia last night. “Because from what I understand, folks in Philly like a good brawl. I’ve seen Eagles fans.”

Red Steel reminded me of this quote from the peaceful one last night.
