America Without Apology (Optimistic Election View)
The New Criterion Blog (Arma Virumque) ^ | October 9, 2008 | Roger Kimball

The question I have most often been asked the past few weeks is whether I stand by my prediction that John McCain would win in November. Way back in ancient times, that is, toward the end of August, 2008, I said that “Personally, I think John McCain is going to win, and I’m not talking about a hanging-chad squeakeroo. No, I think it will be a blow-out for McCain.” Interlocutors both anxious and gleeful have lined up to ask: Do I continue, after all we’ve been through these past weeks–the economy, the Palin-Katie Couric train wreck, the lackluster second debate, the economy, the economy, the economy–do I still believe that McCain has any chance of winning, let alone winning by a landslide?

I admit that my confidence has been dented. But it has by no means evaporated. “What? Have you looked at the polls?” Frankly, I feel about polls the way Disraeli (I think it was) felt about statistics: there are, he said, lies, damned lies, and statistics. Like everyone else, I am more inclined to believe them when they support an outcome I favor. Otherwise, I accord them the large measure of scepticism they deserve. Bottom line: I still believe John McCain will win, and I’ll say why in a moment . . .

The New Criterion is, in my view, the finest cultural journal on the planet, and their website is first rate. This short essay by Roger Kimball, found on the website blog ("Arma Virumque"), presents some excellent reasons for hope and optimism regarding the election.

McCain/Palin will win on Election Day. But talk is cheap... I'm betting a very large amount in the stock market that they do. Since much of this market crash is in anticipation of a Marxist win, the market will explode straight up (could easily see 1000 points) when McCain/Palin wins. Deep out of the money calls are the ticket.

I disagree with him about it being a blowout win. However, I still believe McCain lose a close race with a massive Bradley Effect. The Obama campaign is acting too arrogantly and smugly, and it's turning off many voters. If Obama had actually been the post-racial candidate he originally advertised himself to be in the early Democrat Party primary season (remember, many blacks were suspicious of him because he wasn't "authentic" and the early polls among them supported Hillary), then I'd say O'Bambi in a landslide.

However, the Marxist imagery, the crying "racism" at the drop of a hat, and Stuttering Barry's sudden turning into Tom Dewey and trying shut up and be bland the last 24 days of the election, still gives me hope that McCain could pull it off (though I seriously doubt he has the stones to pull it off).

These two candidates are two of the worst choices for President since Gerald Ford/Jimmy Carter in 1976. I wish the GOP had nominated Mitt Romney, while the Democrats nominated a pro-life/pro-defense liberal who chimed with their domestic policies (a younger Zell Miller, or a charismatic, converted-to-pro-life Joe Lieberman), that gave Americans better choices to lead our country beginning in Jan., 2009.

I hope that, in 2012, the GOP would nominate someone who actually believed and followed the principles laid out in the Republican Party platform, who didn't consider Sen. Biden, Sen. Obama, and Sen. Kennedy "My good friends". Hopefully, Sarah Palin will take the opportunity to listen to good Conservative voices like the Heritage Foundation and bone up on her policy positions, like Ronald Reagan did between 1977-1980.

With the advent of the alternative media, the GOP needs to by-pass the Mainstream Media altogether and concentrate on Blogs, the Internet, and maybe even new technology that we might not even know about now in October, 2008. The GOP (and many of us) are still too beholden to what the New York Times and Washington Post have to say. I say we're back to normal with the press....the "objective", "straight down the middle" myth was created only fairly recently (at the start of WW II when we had a common enemy in Nazi Germany), what with "Tory" and "Patriot" papers during the American Revolution, "Pro-Union" and "Pro-Secession" papers during the Civil War, and Democrat and Republican newspapers all through the 19th and early 20th Century. In other words, quit whining about "negative" coverage and accept it as par for the course and give credence to alternative news sources.

I think the best strategy for Mc Cain to win is send him back to Arizona for the next 3 weeks, let his campaign do there thing without his influence and let Sarah carry the ball at all the rally’s.

I agree, the market is reacting to the possibility of a Democrat takeover. I think the market usually takes a dive before Presidential elections at the thought of Democrats getting in. It would be interesting to track. The fear, reasonably, would be even much higher at the thought of Obama as President (God, please forbid) and the Democrats taking over Congress. Yikes!

...the "objective", "straight down the middle" myth was created only fairly recently (at the start of WW II when we had a common enemy in Nazi Germany)

... and the NYTimes, et all, only came onboard during WWII after communist Russia was attacked. Before that, Leftists in this country were raging pacifists who didn't care a fig that Europe was being overrun by Hitler.

I was getting mildly optimistic about McCain winning until I heard his idiocy yesterday reassuring Republicans that we have nothing to fear with an Obama Presidency and that Obama is a decent, good man. Good Lord! He came across as a tottering old fool. If he wins, it will ONLY be by the grace of God on this country that has, by and large, forsaken Him.

And speaking of Jimmy Carter, now that he was mentioned in tnis article, where has he been? He has been so public in denouncing President Bush at every opportunity, you’d think he’d be front and center promoting Obama. Last week he came out and officially endorsed Obama, but I don’t think I’ve heard much else from him. Maybe he is as scared of an O-Presidency as the rest of us.

So how about a link that goes to their site instead of to “Pajamas Media”. The Google search terms I’ve tried so far don’t turn up anything.

I don’t know what “Google” you’re using but mine returns “The New Criterion” website and blogs right at the top of the list.

Now mine does, too. Google hiccup?? But it's still best practice to include the link.
