“U.S. Rep. Ray LaHood told junior high school students individual votes for president don’t count”

Well, the votes count within their own states.

By the way, we are a republic, not a democracy.

Ignorance of the Constitution is rife anymore. While a state can award all of their Electoral votes to whomever wins the popular vote in that state one state cannot arbitrarily decide to eliminate the Electoral College.

Rats love direct democracy because it’s terribly easy to manipulate the uneducated masses. That said, this idiot doesn’t realize that, should the electoral college be eliminated, states with small populations will have zero sway in the elections, period.

No doubt the students were shocked as they had yet to learn about the Constitution.

With the closeness of the national polls and Obama leading in swing states we may have McCain winning the popular vote while losing the Electoral College.

Good riddence LaHood. Another liberal Republican gone. Libs hate the electoral college because they hate having to compete for votes in places like the south and midwest. Although, I’m thinking Illinois sending its electoral votes to the winner of the popular vote probably helps Republicans though - they have a better chance at winning the national popular vote than the popular vote in Illinois.

An argument he might well make this year - since McCain is likely to win the popular vote and lose in the Electoral College.

Elimination of Electoral College means:

1) National Vote Recounts
2) Tyranny of the Urbanites over the Rural Folks
3) More goldurned political commercials in democrat-run states ... don't we have enough to stomach being governed by them without having to hear their drivel 24/7?

Hrmmm yea good luck with that.

Sounds easy enough to me -- It's simply a matter of getting two-thirds of both the house and senate to propose it and then getting three-quarters of the states to ratify it.

If he gets started right away, he could get the change made in time for the 2012 election. :=)

The logic of this is that
if the electoral college is antiquated,
then so is the need for the senate,
or even a president for that matter,
we can just run everything
through the House of Representatives.
- and have true mob rule ! -

so first you change the economic system...then you change the constitution....nice...

Amazing how Marxism has failed everywhere but there are people just think it’s failed because “We haven’t tried it yet”....

I’m getting so sick of politicians.

ACORN is unhappy that all their vote fraud in Illinois and New York won’t get Barack (blessed be his middle name) Obama one step closer to being elected and they have to travel by the bus load to forsaken states like Ohio and Florida to travel from precinct to precinct on election day casting their multiple votes.

We heard this in 2000 when Albert Gore didn’t like losing. Its enough that NY and CA have so much influence, but the Founding Fathers were eternally wise to put limits in place to keep a certain balance. Small States would never have a voice in the country the socialist-progressives want to create. They don’t live in small states, so they couldn’t care less. Small states are only good for raising crops and taxes for liberals to spend on programs where they can get some kickback.
