No, it's not impossible to contain the costs. There is plenty that can be done to lower costs. Standardizing the forms for instance. If all insurance companies used a standardized form, administration would be cut to about 10% of the cost, instead of around the 26% it is now (check those numbers). Torte reform would put limits on makpractice settlements, lowering hospital liability costs. It would lower DR. malpractice insurance costs. Cut their costs and you cut the patients costs. And for gods sake, don't listen to anyone who tells you canadian health care is cheaper. it costs the average canadian taxpayer making 60 grand a year about 20,000 a year in taxes.

And that does not include things like pills, crutches, eye care, foot care, dental care, any medical devices. that's for just basic, crappy care.

If we wanted to keep our private system, but move to a single payer system like Canada, except private, the easiest thing to do is get rid of every insurance company except one.

Imagine the mass unemployment that would cause in the insurance industry though. (which will happen anyway if we ever did get "free" 20,000 health care.)

Holy jeez. I thought you were kidding about that but I just saw it in another article posted on another thread. That's the kind of thing that can really give a story legs....the type of meme that the late night comedians tend to pick up on and even the Joe six pack types who don't know a congressman from a page tend to remember. I still think the media will tie itself in knots trying to deflect the damage away from Obama though. We'll see.
