That's Not Good. As someone else pointed out, anyone could print up fake emails. But if you had the electronic versions, faking them would be harder, and if they were signed (electronically) harder still.
However as someone else pointed out, if they were sent through Senate or other US government servers, there is an electronic trail, if anyone cares to set the hounds on it.
