“Sometimes things have to get worse before they get better. Our elected officials need to understand their place.”

Did Noriega understand his place when he violated his oath of office and ran out of state to evade the House sargaent-at-arms?

“As far as fiscally, he can do no worse to us that Cornyn just did.” - What a moronic statement!
Noriega has attacked Cornyn for not spending enough money.

Noriega wants to raise the eligibility from 200% of the federal poverty level to 300% for SCHIP - HE WANTS TO TRIPLE SCHIP SPENDING!

Do you think that is the #1 problem in DC is that senators are not spending enough money?
Do you realize that Noriega is for spending billions more to provide welfare services for children of illegal aliens?

Gramm switched in the early '80s once he realized how popular Reagan was proving to be (among other reasons). He was sort of a mentor to Perry and convinced him to switch in 1989 or 1990 because he felt that Republicans were going to be taking over the state government.

I am an old guy who lived through all that and I remember it well. The reason for the split with the Democrats was the same for them as it was for millions of other Democrats. The Democrat Party went left and the Republicans went right. It had nothing to do with some calculation as to who was going to win. (Your thinking that way is another reason I doubt you. That is the way the left thinks.) John Connally was another Democrat who switched to the Republican Party and made a brief bid for the Presidency and I supported him.

That still does not explain or justify your comment to PhiKapMom. IMO, your thinking is a few degrees off plumb.

Same here in Mississippi... but we do have a rat congresscritter that gets re-elected... but he is a dino. Pro life, pro Military and pro NRA but he is a socialist... love taxes and wealth redistribution. The retired Military vote keeps him in. I have NEVER voted for him. Outside of him, no one that I know will even speak to a dim beyond minimal exchanges.

Losers always go for personal attacks. Sorry you can't handle a different opinion than your own.

Why don’t you move on to another website? You don’t belong here.

"Not only do I doubt you are a Republican I also doubt you are from Texas. Too dumb on both counts."

Yep. South side of Lubbock and a Daughter of the Republic of Texas.

Your personal attacks do more disservice to the Republicans than my honest discenting opinion on one scoundrel: hateful, hateful. You must be so proud.

I'd love to believe that any Democrats who became Republicans in Texas, whether it be Perry or Carole Keeton-Smith-Strayhorn-Johnson-McClellan were all ideologically sound Republicans who mistakenly voted and ran as Democrats for decades and only switched because they identified with the right and just didn't realize it, but that's a little too convenient for what went on in the '80s (especially for those like Perry who didn't switch until the late '80s/early '90s).

It's not helped by the fact that Perry and others have done things as Republicans that leave you wondering what their motives are, whether it was trying to force the Gardasil crap down the throat of parents of young girls through executive order (that's about as liberal as you can get - try and force a vaccine like that on young girls through executive order) or his idiotic "guard the borders with webcams" deal (all the while playing up our close relations with Mexico and trying to soften the rhetoric about tighter border security).

I'll give Gramm some credit - he stood up in Congress and supported Reagan's tax cuts, but he's done some things since then that leave me wondering about his motives.

As far as John Connally, he's in a different class all by himself. He switched long before it became popular (during a time when being a Republican was very unpopular no less and he was even supporting Nixon as a Democrat) and he did it without the support network that Perry and others had.

Sorry, forgot to address that in my post - PhiKapMom made the statement "Spent 8 years in Texas and not one time did I meet at Republican that would vote for a Dem over the GOP — not once."

My view is that there were plenty of Republicans who voted for Democrats over Republicans and there always has been - Gramm didn't magically turn a solid Democrat district into a Republican one without having Republican backers while he still had a "D" next to his name, Rick Perry didn't get only 39% of the vote in 2006 without more than a few Republicans staying home or voting for somebody else, Ann Richards beat out Clayton Williams with the help of more than one Republican woman (including my wife and mother) and so on.

I'll apologize for being harsh on Gramm, but I'm harsh because I think he's been corrupted since then. He may have served the GOP well while in office, but since then he's a different person.

Why would anyone want to vote for "Pinapple Face" anyway?

Gramm switched in the early '80s once he realized how popular Reagan was proving to be (among other reasons).

No, he resigned his seat an switched parties and ran again in a special election for his seat as a Republican when Tip O'Neil removed him from the budget committee in 1983 as punishment for coauthoring the Gramm-Latta tax bill in 1981 that implemented Reagan's tax cuts.

The funny thing was that due to the extreme gerrymandering of Gramm's district, he had to advertized in both Houston and the Dallas-Forth Worth media markets when he ran in the special election to regain his seat. They are the most expensive media markets in the state but also have the most Republican voters. Within days of Gramm winning reelection to his House district in the special election, 4-term US Senator John Tower announced he would not run for reelection in 1984. Gramm almost immediately announced his candidacy for John Tower's seat. The special election campaign greatly helped Gramm's name recognition and he easily won the Republican nomination and beat State Senator Lloyd Doggett in the general election by a comfortable margin.
