She was a close friend and former roommate of the woman who was running a call girl ring for the DNC out of the Columbia Plaza Hotel in DC. The name of Dean's then- girlfriend (later his wife, Mo Dean) appeared in the madam's address book (which Dean had seen) and this naturally piqued Dean's interest. There is a theory (put forward in the book, Silent Coup) that Dean orchestrated the Watergate break-in to find out what the DNC had on his girlfriend and to try to protect her if possible.
