We have a disaster here — which is what you should expect when you delegate a non-conservative to make the conservative (nay, the American) case. We can parse it eight ways to Sunday, but I think the commentary is missing the big picture.

Here's what Obama needed to do tonight: Convince the country that he was an utterly safe, conventional, centrist politician who may have leftward leanings but will do the right thing when the crunch comes.

Now, as the night went along, did you get the impression that Obama comes from the radical Left? Did you sense that he funded Leftist causes to the tune of tens of millions of dollars? Would you have guessed that he's pals with a guy who brags about bombing the Pentagon? Would you have guessed that he helped underwrite raging anti-Semites? Would you come away thinking, "Gee, he's proposing to transfer nearly a trillion dollars of wealth to third-world dictators through the UN"?

Nope. McCain didn't want to go there. So Obama comes off as just your average Center-Left politician. Gonna raise your taxes a little, gonna negotiate reasonably with America's enemies; gonna rely on our very talented federal courts to fight terrorists and solve most of America's problems; gonna legalize millions of hard-working illegal immigrants.

McCain? He comes off as Center-Right .. or maybe Center-Left ... but, either way, deeply respectful of Obama despite their policy quibbles.

Great. Memo to McCain Campaign: Someone is either a terrorist sympathizer or he isn't; someone is either disqualified as a terrorist sympathizer or he's qualified for public office. You helped portray Obama as a clealy qualified presidential candidate who would fight terrorists.

If that's what the public thinks, good luck trying to win this thing.

With due respect, I think tonight was a disaster for our side. I'm dumbfounded that no one else seems to think so. Obama did everything he needed to do, McCain did nothing he needed to do. What am I missing

Sorry, but that's the way I see it. The posters who do this need to go write in their damn diary, start their own blog, or seek therapy. There is not one reasonable thing about claiming McCain lost tonight, and it's all finished for us. At worst, it was a tie, and the debate format was kind of lame. It's hardly anything to get ballistic about.

And the poll threads are the same way. WTF is all the doom. McCain loses? Oh well..I'll get the hell over it and work for more conservatives in congress for 2010. What else can we do? Some people THRIVE on this cynical depressing shit. Ain't for me, dude.

Exactly! There is something to that old saying “People remember the Last thing you say or do” I think tactically
it is imperative the last debate Mccain unleashes political blitzkrieg on Obama. I think the Obama campaign is scared to death and tonite breathed a big sigh of relief. Mccain is holding his cards wisely. Still I think Obama was on his heels tonite. I still cant believe he did not say he would repsond to an invasion of Israel without UN approval. That will come up and IMO will Hurt Obama tremendously.

Format sucked for gloves off. Obama would have had to really walked into something for McCain to really punch him. Otherwise McCain would have come off as going off on a tangent just to abuse.

I don’t think that is accurate. What I thought I heard him say is that people should not HAVE to take their kid to the ER for an asthma attack [because they should have regular insurance coverage that would enable them to have a doctor of their own].

If you can move the ILLEGALS (you are paying for) out of the way your kid MIGHT get to see a doctor too if you go to the emergency room. But, of course, your kid (as an American citizen) gets no preferential treatment because the hospital staff can't ask if the ILLEGAL is illegal.

And while you are asked for a cash payment for the remainder of the bill your insurance doesn't pay the ILLEGAL will just give the hospital a bogus address/or welfare card and never pay a cent.

Now, just imagine OBAMA'S policy of EVERY CHILD WILL BE INSURED! I didn't hear a distinction of whether that included ILLEGALS which I'm sure it does since we already 'owe' them an free education!

McCain looked old and tired, stammered, and again let opportunities get away to hit Obama where it hurts.

Obama looked confident and sure of himself. His line of BS and lies were smoothly delivered with a minumum of stuttering. Dumb a$$ America, fresh from their sitcoms and six paks probably ate it all up- none the wiser.

I normally enjoy the NRO crew (lots of insightful analysis) but their knee-jerk negatitivy is getting tiresome, and the quickness with which some of them abandon ship is disturbing. There is still a month left, plenty of time to rip Obama for Ayers/Reszko/Wright/Fannie & Freddie/corruption/weak foreign policy, e.g, the $3 million to a Chicago planetarium, followed by a $200K contribution to Obama from the owner. Tonight’s debate laid the foundation for the coming attack. For example, expect to hear mor eabout the proposal to relieve hte pressure on homeowners to keep them in their homes wile Obama proposees to stick it to small businesses.

It seems NRO was more interested in having McCain tell Obama off — it would have felt cathartic but self-defeating. McCain did not do that, and like the snob who relentlessly positions himself to be “proven right” no matter what the outcome, NRO wants to declare the race over so they can “I told you so” for the next 4 years. My father told me a test of character is whether you want to be in a foxhole with him/her when the assault begins. With these NRO panic-types, I would never turn my back to them!
