Based upon such data as default projections, could it have been possible to even trigger it? Herbert and Marion Sandler, in 2006, for example?
This is exactly right. If Obama had an R by his name his Presidential run would’ve been over just because of those associations.

He said it wasn’t just that he associated with these people, and certainly just sitting in Wright’s church doesn’t make you “as bad” as Wright, and hanging out in Ayer’s living room doesn’t make you a terrorist.

Most people - normal people - would have looked at this bunch and ran away from them as fast as possible.

The way Soutern Poverty killed the Klan comes to mind. First tie them to a real damage, the current economic meltdown offers an opportunity. Then take them to court and sue them into oblivion. Same with the media I suppose, sue ‘em for the damage they have done.
