(While acknowledging the rightness of your cautionary note, which is good commonsense, and while meaning no disrespect thereto. I do not doubt he’d do it to a non-pshopped flag, given the opportunity.)
I think the photo was taken for a promo piece on a book he had published about his “glorious” rebel past — it’s discussed in “The Obama Nation”. Memory fails me now about what publication was mentioned.

Nope. That is a real photo.
It was on the cover of Chicago Magazine when they did the story on that (blank) Bill Ayers.
It's genuine. This shot was published in Chicago magazine in '01, with an interview with Ayers. He's proud of who he is, and I'll bet he'd do this same picture today.
