“WE have seen this kind of thing before. It was, as I recall, called the Waffen SS. Make of that, what you will...”
No, the Waffen SS was actually a military unit that conducted itself honorably. The civilian SS ran the concentration camps, kicked in people’s doors, and so on.
At what point does Godwin’s Law cease to apply to discussions of Obama, by the way?
“Hitler had already told his Wehrmacht generals that the attack on Russia was to be carried out with unprecedented, unrelenting and unmerciful harshness. The Waffen-SS made its name in Russia for its unflinching resolve in attack and its cruelty to prisoners and civilians.”

With over a million men under arms in the Waffen SS, I sure most were honorable, but their devotion to their leaders ideals often twisted them. As we head into these dark times, I have to think what would become of us and our ideals, following humiliating war losses and economic catastrophe.
Well, except for the routine massacre of both military and civilian prisoners throughout the war, I guess the waffen ss did perform pretty honorably during the war.
/s (do I really need to?)
They weren't a military branch per se, but essentially a private militia in service to the Nazi party. As to conducting themselves *honorably*? There's a lot of room for debate there.
My point stands. What Obama is describing is essentially the rebirth of the SS, a private militia, in service to a political party, with access to heavy weapons of war. Not a good idea, to any rational person...
