Exclusive: Obama to preempt McCain assault
Politico ^ | 4 Oct 2008 | Mike Allen

Posted on 10/04/2008 8:36:34 PM PDT by Rokke

Branding his opponent as “erratic in a crisis,” Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) is preempting plans by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) to portray him as having sinister connections to controversial Chicagoans.

Obama officials call it political jujitsu – turning the attacks back on the attacker.

McCain officials had said early in the weekend that they plan to begin advertising after Tuesday’s debate that will tie Obama to convicted money launderer Tony Rezko and former Weathermen radical William Ayers.

But Obama isn’t waiting to respond. His campaign is going up Monday on national cable stations with a scathing ad saying: “Three quarters of a million jobs lost this year. Our financial system in turmoil. And John McCain? Erratic in a crisis. Out of touch on the economy. No wonder his campaign wants to change the subject.

“Turn the page on the financial crisis by launching dishonorable, dishonest ‘assaults’ against Barack Obama. Struggling families can't turn the page on this economy, and we can't afford another president who is this out of touch.”

Then Obama says: “I'm Barack Obama and I approved this message.”

McCain officials told Politico that the new offensive is likely to focus on Rezko and Ayers. The officials said the campaign will not bring up the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama’s former pastor, because McCain has forbade them from using that as a weapon. Without being specific, the officials said outside groups may focus on Wright.

When word of the planned attacks leaked Saturday, Obama officials said within hours that it was an attempt by McCain to distract voters from the economy.

“We think the McCain campaign made a huge error by telling the press that their strategy was to distract from the most important issue facing voters,” a senior Obama official said. “Every attack going forward will be easy to characterize for what it is – an attempt to distract from the Bush-McCain economic record."

McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds hinted at the tough new line Saturday on “Fox & Friends.”

“There are associations that are important to who Barack Obama is as a candidate, who he’d be as president,” Bounds said.

Obama-Biden communications director Dan Pfeiffer said about the new ads: “If John McCain thinks he can ‘turn the page’ on the economic crisis facing American families, he is even more out of touch than we imagined. Now there may be no good answers for John McCain due to his erratic response to the financial crisis, but his desire to avoid discussing the economy is something we will remind voters of everyday for the next month.”

Here is the BILL AYERS ad, pass it around.

I heard an interview with someone from this project last night, it was absolutely CHILLING.

They spent a big chunk of money on lawyers to even get this produced, all of it is true, Obama’s high priced liberal inside D.C. lawyers were all over them before they even released it. They are being intimidated with CRIMINAL prosecution for a political ad.

What is going on with Obama is pure Stalinist tactics. In Missouri, as he said the threat of being CRIMINALLY PROSECUTED for not telling the truth about Obama is enough for 95% of people to Shut Up.

They were threatening CRIMINAL prosecution if you disagreed that 95% of people would get a tax cut with Obama’s plan.

Please also watch this video too and pass it around.

Our only way to fight back is to educate people, about 20-25% of the people are lost in this country, we will win this election.

That is exactly what I was thinking when I read this. Maybe it's like the Palin announcement. McCain let everyone think he was going to choose Romney - and the Obamanite planned for it by preparing ads to run immediately after the announcement. Only thing is, he picked Sarah Palin instead.

Actually it was smart to wait IMO. All of his shady connections should be fresh on the independents’ minds that last weekend.

Now is the time to attack. Voter’s attention spans are very limited. Why shoot all your bullets early. Thirty days to go...hit them hard and hit them often!!

He is definitely worried, he can shut up the MSM, but he can’t shut us up. The more he talks about it the more people google Bill Ayers, find out about Franklin Marshall Davis, Auchi, etc.

This is Obama’s greatest fear.

It started with SARAH calling him out on his ant-surge vote and funding and calling his lame ass out on “bombing villages and civilians”.

We are starting the surge now and it WILL succeed.

I don’t think that it matters one way or another that they know it’s coming. They will have to defend against it. McCain has already been bloodied about as much as is possible about the economy. This was a manufactured crisis and people are not suffering to any great degree, oh, I forgot all those people who are losing their house, which they shouldn’t have had in the first place. So go rent something, like what you should have done in the first place. These people wouldn’t have been voting for McCain anyway. And if your’e not suffering, why would you think you need to pay higher taxes? To show you’re patriotism?

They're scared, no doubt. And this "erratic in a crisis" campaign against a well established Senator and a former POW, I just don't see it working very well. More likely people are gonna wonder what the Obamessiah's hiding.

Then again, I may well be giving the American voter too much credit.

“Either this “leak” is profound stupidity, or they have something else in mind.”

I think what they had in mind was exactly this response by the Obama campaign. The McCain campaign threw a light jab and Obama shifted his whole stance. In poker, that is the equivalent of showing your cards. In boxing, its the fastest way to open yourself to a solid hook to the jaw.

I think you are right and what has them worried is that Palin has her footing back and she is attacking. They have no response to her and they know it. For whatever reason, she just has “too strong medicine” for Obama and Biden and they can't respond. Going to b a crazy last month.

Another ‘community organizer’ from the Weather Underground Documentary;

No doubt Clinton sees an opening in 2012 if Obama loses. If he wins, he’ll either destroy the left in the next 4 years or be reelected. Either way, Hillary would never become president. On the other hand, if McCain wins, he’ll be too old to run in 2012 and Sarah may be perceived as “not presidential”, leaving an opening for Hillary.

Maybe it is just wishful thinking, but I think perhaps the MSM and Team Obama just rushed into a trap.

I suspect there may be an uncovered nugget or three in the McCain pantry, and the Obamabots just opened the door.
