Exclusive: Obama to preempt McCain assault
Politico ^ | 4 Oct 2008 | Mike Allen

Posted on 10/04/2008 8:36:34 PM PDT by Rokke

Branding his opponent as “erratic in a crisis,” Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) is preempting plans by Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) to portray him as having sinister connections to controversial Chicagoans.

Obama officials call it political jujitsu – turning the attacks back on the attacker.

McCain officials had said early in the weekend that they plan to begin advertising after Tuesday’s debate that will tie Obama to convicted money launderer Tony Rezko and former Weathermen radical William Ayers.

But Obama isn’t waiting to respond. His campaign is going up Monday on national cable stations with a scathing ad saying: “Three quarters of a million jobs lost this year. Our financial system in turmoil. And John McCain? Erratic in a crisis. Out of touch on the economy. No wonder his campaign wants to change the subject.

“Turn the page on the financial crisis by launching dishonorable, dishonest ‘assaults’ against Barack Obama. Struggling families can't turn the page on this economy, and we can't afford another president who is this out of touch.”

Then Obama says: “I'm Barack Obama and I approved this message.”

McCain officials told Politico that the new offensive is likely to focus on Rezko and Ayers. The officials said the campaign will not bring up the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Obama’s former pastor, because McCain has forbade them from using that as a weapon. Without being specific, the officials said outside groups may focus on Wright.

When word of the planned attacks leaked Saturday, Obama officials said within hours that it was an attempt by McCain to distract voters from the economy.

“We think the McCain campaign made a huge error by telling the press that their strategy was to distract from the most important issue facing voters,” a senior Obama official said. “Every attack going forward will be easy to characterize for what it is – an attempt to distract from the Bush-McCain economic record."

McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds hinted at the tough new line Saturday on “Fox & Friends.”

“There are associations that are important to who Barack Obama is as a candidate, who he’d be as president,” Bounds said.

Obama-Biden communications director Dan Pfeiffer said about the new ads: “If John McCain thinks he can ‘turn the page’ on the economic crisis facing American families, he is even more out of touch than we imagined. Now there may be no good answers for John McCain due to his erratic response to the financial crisis, but his desire to avoid discussing the economy is something we will remind voters of everyday for the next month.”

Agree 100%. But his campaign did say it was fine for the 527’s to address wright. So they should non stop. Prior to this he asked them not to.

You are right on the money.... When is McCain going to learn
never help the enemy... never let them know what you are thinking until it is too late. I commented on the campaign suspension. Dumb move.....he should have just showed up at the Capital building and said “I couldn't think of anything else but this crisis and I needed to be where I belong. No fanfare just suit up and show up!

I think it was a mistake to have Palin bring up Ayers at all let alone before the debate, they opened the door to media bashing just two days after she repaired her image.

McCain should be the attack dog, Palin the voice of the people.

i remember when i was an undergrad i worked in the university bookstore and cloward and piven books were used by the sociology and political science departments for classes.

Well entrenched, eh? This time everyone who believes in America needs to stand up. This is reality.

I sure would love to have Rudy Giuliani's phone number....

BTW McCain ws a fighter pilot and knows how to get into Obama's OODA loop. He has done it before and is about to do it again, I truly believe. Never count McCain out.

Palin did not bring up Ayers . The front page of sat NYT did it for her. So what she shouldn't comment on front page stories from the paper of record ?

I find the choice of words by the Obama campaign to be somewhat ironic. It was McCain in 2004 who called the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth "dishonorable and dishonest" because they attacked his buddy, John Kerry. What goes around comes around.

Did you all see the show on FOX tonight “Saving our economy, whats next”

They are tying Obama into the mortgage mess. It is going to come at him from every direction.

The term I like to use is "Hyperwar"! Our military applied this label to their strategy of toppling Hussein. It refers to the synchronized, coordinated use of all our military branches.

I forsee Team McCain employing a similar strategy against another Hussein, namely the thin-skinned Barack The Unabama.

Of course the swift boat affair happened 30 years ago and was pretty much he said he said. There are paper trials connecting Ayers and big O . These seem to put onto question his lame defense of the friendship. Let them attack Mac it will be a nice change from the cavity search off Palin and her family. What goes around comes around indeed.

McCain ain’t trying to turn voters away from the crisis. Voters can’t turn away from what faces them in every direction... Democrat participation in, and a cover up of, corruption that has nearly bankrupted our Country.

Obama thinks he can manage a crisis by “call me when you need me” politics, attack the messenger tactics, and “rope a dope” slick ads.

Americans are too smart for that, Obama. John McCain and Sarah Palin are going to reform even you, and warn Americans of your nefarious ties to terrorism, corruption, and financial scandal.

My response to the Bush McCain mantra would be, “I have as much to do with the Bush Presidency as Barack Obama has to do with the Bombs his friend William Ayers set off at the Pentagon.”

That's a winner!

What do Obama and Osama have in common? They both know somebody who blew up the Pentagon!

This guy could be so easily destroyed. Do a campaign ad like:

If a Republican was running for President who wouldn't produce his birth certificate to prove he was an American. Had proven relations ship with a known unrepentent terrorist as well as spent and cannot account for $100 million dollars tax payer dollars with this terrorist. Was supported by Hamas and took Hamas money, what would the media do (then show Katie, Brian, and Charlies heads explode! Yep they would crusify him. But its not a Republican, its a democrat name Barak Hussien Obama.....or Berry Sorantio...(can't be sure without a birth certificate) So what does the media do (then show them with their heads on chimp bodies hear no evil, see no evil and speak no evil) they just ignore it. They don't care what gets elected, just as long as its a Democrat. Make their heads explode. Vote McCain/Palin!
