While Barack Obama has lengthened his lead over John McCain in many states over the past few weeks, little has changed in Maine.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Maine votersconducted October 2--finds Obama with 51% of the vote and McCain with 46%. Thats virtually identical to the results from mid-September when Obama up by four.
Both men are viewed favorably by 55% of voters.

Good news ping! If McCain can win the mostly rural/small town northern part of the state, he can cause Obama trouble.
SEND SARAH PALIN THERE!!!
“As Maine goes, so goes Canada!” /snic
McCain could have won this election in a landslide had he known how to run an aggressive presidential campaign. After the convention, at the time when the conservative base was fired up, 0bama was on the ropes, and instead of hitting him hard and putting him away, the McCain campaign went on autopilot for a month.
Now he is 5-7 points behind, depending on which poll you look at. Does he continue on autopilot, or does he start fighting?
I read yesterday the media was afraid of election night because Obama always polled in exit polls an average of 3 points more than the votes he actually got. Polls before the election he got an avg of 5 points more than the actual vote(against Clinton). You have Collins running extremely well in Maine for Senate , McCain might actually be ahead based on Obama’s overperformance in polls versus actual vote tallies.
Don’t waste your time in Moonbatville, unless you got some freebies or handouts. Maine is the welfare state.
Yes , they are worried of calling a state for Obama based on exits and then at the end of the voting , McCain will carry the state.
Maine ping!
Well, I live in Northern Maine. The morning after the debate I went to the local hang-out for coffee expecting that the talk would be about how Palin really showed everyone she was the real deal. Well, most of the folks didn’t watch the debate BUT they had their opinions formed from watching the MSM morning news shows for a couple minutes. Palin lost, was out of her league, and McCain made a mistake in picking her. When I ventured as to why Obama was qualified to be President the only answer I got was “we don’t want 4 more years of Bush.” No other reason. And, the women were saying,”well yes a woman can be President, just not this woman”!! Honestly, I think it’s supernatural, and we’re just seeing the decline of this Nation as we head towards the end of the age.....
I’ve visited Maine a few times and love the place. But, I don’t really know much about the populace.
What is it about the general populace, apart from someone’s comment that it’s a welfare state, that makes it lean towards Obama?
I’ve heard that a lot of retirees from NY, Mass. have moved there. Anyone have a view?
A friend called me this morning and said if McCain doesn’t come out swinging in the next debate, we might assume he doesn’t want to win. The theory we’ve been throwing around was that since the financial mess, McCain seems to have lost his fire...and possibly the will to win. Why struggle with the negative press he would get as President (he’s definitely not used to that), and the financial woes that will grip the country, when he could just go back to being a senator and take retirement whenever he chooses. Just an opinion, but we can’t seem to explain his lack of taking advantage of key arguments any other way. We’ll see how he does next week and if he’s willing to bounce back to his a fighting stance.
Maine’s not Maine anymore. It’s filled up with over-educated exurbanites who have taken up sailing.
And, under educated young people dumbed down by the education system up here. Most don’t have a clue.
Over the last 20 years we have all heard Rush describe his faith in the American people to do the right thing. That when Conservative principles are put in effect they always work. While Conservative principles may always work, the American electorate has changed forever.
1. Over the last 60 years Liberals have taken over all centers of higher education in this country for the expressed political purpose of inculcating students with socialism and communism. They have succeeded beyond even their wildest imaginations.
2. Illegal aliens have flooded America. They live off the government dole, they utilize the services and benefits of America at the expense of hard-working, tax paying Americans. They multiply at a geometric rate. They are 95% liberal, they vote illegally and for the DemonRats. California and other western states have been almost taken over by them. Now, cities all over America are over-run by these criminals.
3. Effete elitist liberals adore Europe for it's 'sophistication' and 'culture'. They want to turn American into a socialist state. They do this by attacking capitalism, 'big' business, lawsuits, environmentalism, Kyoto etc.
4. The Republican party is comprised of 'moderates', country-club bluebloods and liberals. Conservatives have NO voice in government. The submissive nature of the party was never more on display that it's voting for 700 billion dollars of taxpayer fraud! There is NO one standing up for Conservatism today.
The end result is that the percentage population now identifying with liberalism is beyond 50 % and growing rapidly. You have seen the last Republican win in your lifetime and perhaps for ever! As the Left takes over total control of America and moves father and farther towards the final destruction of the country and the Constitution the Republicans will be come the New Democrats, the Left will grow bolder and identify themselves correctly as communists. And there is NO stopping it from happening.
Throw in the Islamicfication of America and we're finished!
I agree! It's the 4th quarter and you're behind. Don't keep your All America game changer on the bench, send them in to win the game!
We are only down five in Maine after all the economic drubbing we have taken in the past three weeks? Wow!
I think DJ is right that we can win this state.
You’re a very cheerful person./s
Regardless of what people say about "socialism," the same exact ways Freepers describe Obama is how conservatives of the 1820s described Andrew Jackson. George Washington and John Adams were SURE Thomas Jefferson and his ilk would ruin the country.
The "Republicans" of Jefferson's day adored France and hated traditionalist Britain.
Solomon said there is nothing new under the sun. He was right.
Maine is one of two states (Nebraska the other) that divides its electoral votes by Congressional district. And Republicans usually run more strongly in the northern part of the state than the Portland-dominated southern part. It makes sense for McCain to make a major effort there, as Obama is trying to win the Omaha area of Nebraska.
Get a grip!
