Malignant, malevolent, mendacious - this creep is a cancer on British life

On the day Peter Mandelson was forced to resign in disgrace for the second time, I can remember writing that he wouldn’t be out of work long.

He’d get his reward either in Brussels or the House of Lords.

Even I didn’t imagine that one day he’d achieve both. Nor that it would be Gordon Brown who brought him back from Brussels and swathed him in ermine.

Yes, that Gordon Brown.

The one who was so determined to get rid of Mandelson first time around that he was prepared to sacrifice two of his most trusted supporters to seal his sacking. Peter Mandelson

The embodiment of all that is rotten about Labour: Peter Mandelson at Downing St

That would be the same Gordon Brown who has been foaming with hatred for Mandelson ever since he switched sides and supported Tony Blair for the leadership when John Smith died.

If Mandelson is the answer, what was the question? Imagine the scene inside Number 10 on Thursday night.

‘It’s bad news, Prime Minister. We’re trailing in the polls, the Tories have had a great conference, we look like getting hammered in the Glenrothes by-election, the country is bankrupt and trust in the Government is at an all-time low. We’re all doomed.’

‘Don’t panic, Darling. Salvation is at hand. Get Peter Mandelson on the phone.’

‘Brilliant, Gordon.’ The commentariat spent yesterday debating whether this was a masterstroke by the Prime Minister or the act of a madman.

Mandelson is the guy who fumed at House voting down the bailout bill first time around. Here is his comment:

"I feel they've taken leave of their senses and I hope that in Europe we will not see politicians and parliamentarians replicating the sort of irresponsibility and political partisanship that we have seen in Washington," Mandelson said in an interview with the BBC.

It turns out that the guy is the slime ball through and through. "Irresponsibility and political partisanship" are his middle name.

Yeah, that three hundred years of dominance just don't amount to much, do they?

Mandelson is gay if that helps any.... and demanded a Maserati for his official automobile as an EU minister. I’ll bet he bends over for the Muhammadans

One thing you can be sure of is that with Mandelson back on the scene British domestic politics will suddenly become more entertaining. The present front benches on both sides are populated by dreary production-line hacks, which Mandelson certainly isn’t. I’ve always had a bit of a soft spot for the man - appalling in almost every respect, yet a politician of whom Machiavelli would have wholeheartedly approved.

You can have Slick Wille, Hildebeast, James Carville, and Barney Frank. You will never be bored for a long time. Slick sleeping with royal princesses at 10 Downing St. Hildebeast throwing ash tray at him, James Carville showing up at BBC everyday, and Barney Frank owns the Parliament.

Of course, there is a downside risk. They can ruin your country.

I’d have more sympathy with that argument if the majority of the world’s republics were such shining examples of freedom and meritocracy...
