Dems worry Bush could pardon Rove, Miers By Susan Crabtree Posted: 10/03/08 12:55 PM [ET]

Democrats are worried that President Bush may pardon Karl Rove, Harriet Miers and other key administration officials alleged to have played a role in the firing of nine U.S. attorneys.

Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-Calif.), who chairs a Judiciary Committee subcommittee, expressed concern Friday that Bush pardons on the final day of his tenure in the Oval Office could cut off any chance of former White House officials being forced to testify before Congress about their role in the U.S. attorneys' removal in 2006.

The Department of Justice (DoJ) Office of Inspector General (IG) issued a report Monday that found substantial evidence that the federal prosecutors were fired for improper political reasons. Attorney General Michael Mukasey subsequently appointed Connecticut federal prosecutor Nora Dannehy to investigate the IG’s findings.

Earlier this year, Democrats filed a lawsuit challenging the Bush administration’s assertion of executive privilege to shield current and former White House officials from congressional subpoenas related to the firings.

You can’t pardon anything if it was not a crime.

Well, pardon me, but Obama will certainly pardon Raines and Johnson if elected. To insure that his administration gets off to a fresh start. And the media will applaud his decision, as a means of putting the past behind us so we can have a better future.

I don’t understand —they haven’t been indicted or convicted of anything —why would the President have to pardon them?

bill clinton fired all federal judges when he was elected.

The next front opens up in the 30 Days of Attacks on Republicans.

Now that the Fannie Scandal has slipped off the front page, they are trying to resurrect the US Atty’s bolstered with some GAO report.

The Democrats expressed NO worries when President Clinton pardoned several domestic terrorists from the Weather Underground.

“And pardon the border patrol agents as well!”

That assumes he didn’t push their prosecution which Clinton did not.

As a message to the Border Patrol to underenforce.

Texas plutocrats understand an open border decreases wages and increases their short term profit margins.

I don’t understand —they haven’t been indicted or convicted of anything —why would the President have to pardon them?

Neither was Nixon, but he was under investigation. A pardon couldn't have stopped impeachment, but resignation did that.
