County rejects large number of invalid voter registrations

CROWN POINT | Lake County Republican Chairman John Curley wants a federal investigation into hundreds of voter registrations bearing fictitious signatures or the names of dead and underage people.

"Fraudulent applications are the workings of ACORN groups operating from Milwaukee and Chicago who are getting out the vote for Obama. I'm Republican, but I want everyone who should vote to vote. But I want a clean election," Curley said at a Wednesday news conference.

Lake County elections officials acknowledged they have found problems and had to reject a large portion of the 5,000 registration forms turned in recently by the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN, an activist group that conducted registration drives across the county this summer.

An ACORN spokesperson couldn't be reached Wednesday for comment. Telephones to ACORN offices in Gary, Indianapolis, Chicago and Milwaukee were reported to be disconnected.

Curley acknowledges the work of the county elections board to weed out obviously invalid applications, but said more may have slipped into the voter rolls so he wants U.S. Attorney David Capp to conduct a criminal investigation.

Elections Board Director Sally LaSota and Ruthann Hoagland, a county elections board technologist overseeing voter registration, said Wednesday it appears some ACORN vote canvassers pulled names and addresses from telephone books and forged their signatures.

Curley said one registration form was filled out in the name and address of Jimmy John's, a Crown Point fast-food outlet. Another registration, dated in August, is in the name of a Gary man who died Nov. 16, 2007, according to his death certificate.

Hoagland said large numbers of voter registration forms bore signatures all in the same apparent handwriting style.

LaSota and Hoagland said they instructed ACORN on how to legally register voters, but apparently the organization's canvassers broke rules to meet ACORN-set voter registration quotas to get paid. They said ACORN organizers promised to fire workers who were cheating.

LaSota said hundreds of legitimate potential voters may be unable to cast a ballot in the Nov. 4 general election because ACORN delivered incomplete registrations just recently to the county. LaSota said her staff won't have enough time to research, complete and enter legitimate voter registrations before the mid-month deadline.

The 0bama camp came within a hair of stealing the Indiana primary. Remember the suspicious late returns from Lake County that broke overwhelmingly for 0bama? If we're not careful, once again the dead will rise from the grave on Election Day and push the button for 0bama.

That’s what Obama can do with $400,000,000 of our tax dollars given to ACORN by the ignorant members of Congress.
All Democrats need to be defeated to clean up this voter fraud.

Any county that takes “registration forms” from ACORN are either nuts or Obamanoids.

Hell, based on earlier threads today, half of the bum’s money is flowing in from foreign sources to influence or outright steal our election. And the FEC refuses to open an investigation into it. Our election and voter registration processes are totally fouled up and corrupt. This is sickening.

What's a community organizer to do.

Not the dead. However several thousand absentee ballots from 14 year old “ seniors” registering at Gary and East Chicago High Schools.

It was a FACT busloads of kids from Gary High Schools were taked to crown Point to register during the primary. these were the result of the “slow counts” that night.

Remember Rudy Clay was spouting numbers and claiming Obama had it in the bag when the absentees were counted.

My source is on the other side but is a stand up guy and is voting for McCain

Who made these laws? Shouldn’t you have to show up to a government office to register to vote? Having folks registered by just anyone is unreal.

Did the house pass the bill during some secret meeting? I thought that vote wasn't until tomorrow at the earliest.

Student voter registrations should be examined closely.

Hm... I thought something like that, pulling names from a phone-book and forging the signature on a voter-registration form was illegal. As in: Voter fraud. Which is a felony, if I remember correctly; why aren’t there some REAL BIG charges here?

Only in America. Apparently it's an attack on ones freedom to require citizens to show proof of citizenship via some form of photo identification, plus have social security cards with magnetic strips with information proving citizenship- swiped at the time of casting a ballot recording that person as having voted.

Any attempt to vote somewhere else would result in an alarm going off and arrest.

I don’t know, we take more care making an appointment with a hairdresser than in preserving our right to vote. I was so proud to go down to the election office to register when I turned 18. I think I had to produce a birth certificate. Being registered by some homeless man in a grocery store parking lot makes it lose all importance. (This is for the folks that actually might be real voters. The entire fraud thing is a totally different and huge issue).

This is my county and I am not surprised at all. We have many dem counties here though it is a Red State. Please pray for us conservative republicans here. I have applied to be an election monitor here for the republicans, I am sick of the crap that goes on here, it is because we are so close to corrupt Chicago politics. I can only imagine the corruption and fraud that will take place in nearby Gary.

Perhaps voter registration laws should be changed back to where registrants had to show up at the office of the administrator of elections in the county in which they reside to register. In addition, that they have to provide proof of identity to register.

If I want to register a 20 year old car I have to show up in a government office. If I want to write a check at the grocery store I have to prove my identity. Is it too much to ask to have to do these things to register to vote? Or are we just supposed to throw up our hands and allow our country to be stolen out from under us by these dishonest people?

I stopped by our local campaign office in Blue Bell, PA yesterday. One of the workers told me that they’ve been picking up fraudulent voter registrations here as well. She assured me that fraud prevention efforts are much stronger than ever before and that these will be screened out. I wish I could feel as confident. Another campaign volunteer told me that Obama’s folks were outside our local movie theater (artsy sort) registering voters this weekend. They were registering a lot of young people.
