It’s almost like yelling, “There’s not a fire” in a crowded theater. It’s enough to get the audience’s attention by startling them, even though the alarm isn’t supported by reality.

Such is the case with the cover of the new issue of Time magazine, which features a photograph of a Depression-era soup line and a headline, “The New Hard Times.”

However at the bottom of the cover in much smaller print – “No, this isn’t Depression 2.0.” And the article itself suggests a preventative measure to ward off a Depression – government intervention.

Didn't they do this in 1987? I thought the big Stock Market Crash of '87 was supposed to bring our economy to a halt.

I think this "crisis" is all bull$hit. I was listening to Rush today, and several folks called in to say they got signature loans, one loan officer was advertising for mortgage loans, and so on.

Even if it IS a "crisis", I say it'd be good for the economy. The US economy has been going strong for 26 years (with the exception of the Oil Bust of 1986, where I and 300,000 of my closest dearest friends got laid off the rigs). It wouldn't be so bad for the economy to slow down.

I'm afraid that, with this bill, we're punting the problem downfield for someone else to take care of in the near future. James Imhofe, Senator from Oklahoma, said that with this bill, we're treating the pneumonia caused by the cancer, without treating the cancer itself. Until we perp-walk the folks responsible, Jim Johnson, Jamie GoreLick, Thomas Raines, Bawney Fwank, Chris Dodd, etc., nothing will get accomplished.

The media are "talking down the economy" to help B.O. win the election. You know, what they accused Bush of doing in 2000.

Shoe's on the other foot now, so it's OK ( / sarc).
