It has occurred to me, from time to time, that they would have done better if they had selected Rowan Atkinson for Abp of Canterbury.

Mr. Atkinson has in fact contributed some sensible, thoughtful criticism of hate-speech laws-- specifically the 2005 "Racial And Religious Hatred Bill" in the UK Parliament.

Among his comments: "The freedom to criticise ideas, any ideas, even if they are sincerely held beliefs, is one of the fundamental freedoms of society, and a law which attempts to say you can criticise and ridicule ideas as long as they are not religious ideas is a very peculiar law indeed."

I have MUCH more respect for him than that bearded poltroon, +++++Rowan Cantuar, primus inter stulti.

Thank you ... there is indeed much to respect in that statement, and in the rest of his comments quoted in the article.
