Liberals Sneer, Americans Cheer
IBD Editorials ^ | October 1, 2008 | MICHELLE EASTON

Regardless of how well Sarah Palin does in Thursday's debate, conservatives would be astounded if the major media acknowledged her success.

For the most part, the media have decided the appropriate response to the governor is to sneer, and sneering at great conservative leaders, from Ronald Reagan to Rush Limbaugh, has been a liberal pastime for decades.

What makes Gov. Palin unique from the other three candidates in this race is she seems so normal. She worked her way through college, married a good local guy, stayed home with her children for several years and has an impressive professional resume as well.

Millions of Americans never really related to Hillary Clinton on a personal level, what with her Wellesley and Yale education and lobbying/legal work.

Then there was her sticking with Bill while he womanized. It made women wrinkle their brows and question her judgment, even as they noted her hard work to promote liberal ideas.

Katie Couric is a master sneerer. She's never done a fair interview with a conservative woman — ever. It's hard to imagine why campaign strategists waste Palin's time preparing for and sitting through Couric's brand of liberal "gotcha" journalism.

Couric's half-lidded eyes and unbearable condescension toward a woman whose achievements, personal and professional, are so superior to her own were excruciating to watch. But we could have predicted Couric's disparaging questions and snide looks before the interview aired.

I keep wondering why the MSM isn't lambasting Palin over her Journalism education.
LMAO, it's the only topic they "including Obama/Biden" haven't flamed.

When is anyone in the MSM going to give Obama the colonoscopy that Palin has gotten from Couric and Gibson?

It’s criminal that he is escaping scrutiny.

Interesting take. She's betrayed the feminists and the journalists.

tonight on John Gibson he kept playing snippets of libs calling Sarah “dumb.” NOW, what other (male) Governor would the MSM dare call “dumb.” It is just totally sexist. And what else are they doing? They’re calling the majority of voters in Alaska dumb..I mean, what other kind of person would vote for someone dumb? I am so sick of this coverage..it is just outrageous. For someone like Joy Behar to call a sitting Governor DUMB? I’m tired and just want this election over. Which means, I guess, they’ve won in my mind. I’m exhausted. It’s not a level playing field.

Sarah Palin is going to do just fine. Lets hope that the American people will watch the debate and judge her for themselves, rather than accept the pontifications and blatherings of liberal hacks who are profiting from the possiblity of an 0bama presidency.

I’m certainly not as conservative as many of the folks at FR; however, the McCain sign planted in my yard is due in large part to her addition to the ticket.

As a working mother and teacher, I just love the idea of a Vice President who can relate to the middle class experience of juggling career and family and seeing everyone in the family pitch in to make it come together.

Sarah has excited me like no politician since Reagan. Had the priviledge of seeing Reagan speak at a rally at Missouri State University years ago on behalf of Kit Bond. Would stay in line overnight if Sarah ever came to Texas!!!

May God bless John McCain and Sarah Palin (and their families).

It is a pity that Governor Palin must engage in this debate under such a great disadvantage.

Obama won his debate against McCain not on points-he actually lost on points-but because he did not disqualify himself as commander in chief. He appeared plausible as a potential president. The viewers who will decide this election, the independents who are only now becoming engaged, look at their television screens and decide whether the man can be president based on how it looks and sounds. Since this is a Democrat year, since about 90% of the nation now feels that we are on the wrong course, since we are in a financial crisis, a circumstance which traditionally favors Democrats, since Obama will have a truly overwhelming ground game, since the mood of the country is to look for a change, once Obama met the plausibility test, he won the debate. A test of who wins the debate is not who gets the most points but who best advances his candidacy. Obama won as the polls subsequently confirmed.

Why does Palin not enjoy the same structural advantage which favored Obama, that she need only appear to be plausible as the vice president and, by extension, as a substitute president? If she had been properly handled, she would be in that position. After her initial speech at the convention, she was clearly a plausible candidate and the Democrats were on the run. It was obvious that Palin could make a great speech, we just did not know how she would do unscripted. The obvious and prudent course was to present Palin with a very serious speech in a very serious venue on an issue with which she was genuinely expert, energy. Thereafter to open her up on conservative talk radio and on venues with people like Britt Hume. She would then have become an authority instead of an object of ridicule. Instead, she was twice, repeat twice, subjected to one-on-one interviews with liberal sharks. She was not ready but they were.

As a result, the world now distrusts that Palin can step in to the most important job in the world at a time of world crisis. So instead of going into this debate needing merely to show plausibility, she must overcome this apparent disqualifying absence of qualification. What a very great pity. It was not necessary that it should come to this.

What to do now?

Let's take a look at the Charlie Gibson interview. In an attempt to trap her and paint her as a crazed Christian fundamentalist, Gibson quoted her prayer invoking God's guidance for our leaders. By omitting vital portions of her prayer, Gibson actually reversed her sentiments and distorted her meaning. In reply, Palin was clearly aware that Gibson had somehow misquoted her but she was tentative in her response, not authoritative but questioning in tone. Gibson added with certitude, "exact words." Gibson was lying because those were not her exact words and if he did not know her exact words he lied in pretending that he did. No matter, Palin, who was right, looked bad because she was not authoritative. Gibson, who was wrong, looked good because he was authoritative. Lesson is clear.

Palin must go into this debate attacking in authoritative tones. We have already discussed why she needs speak authoritatively. She needs to attack because that changes the subject away from her own alleged lack of experience and onto the deficiencies of Biden and Obama.

From the day she was announced as McCain's candidate, I have said that she was not chosen for her experience but for what her experience reveals about her character. She was chosen because she is good and she is hated by the left because she is good. Now the left has made her stupid. She must return to being good. The issue is not whether she is smart enough, experienced enough, quick enough, or authoritative enough, the issue is whether she is a plagiarist or Obama and Biden are plagiarists; whether she will restrain spending and Obama will spend us into bankruptcy; whether she will oppose corruption and Obama will nurture it as he has done all his career; whether she is a living breathing embodiment of wholesome American ideals and Obama is a stealth Marxist. The list can go on and on. But to get there she must break through Biden and get past the snares laid out by the moderator. She must be good and they must be bad.

She can only do that if she immediately goes over to the attack. It does not matter if she appears rude, it does not matter if she is not responsive to the question posed, it does not matter if some of her assertions are wide of the mark. It matters only that she is on the attack and that she is self-confident.

That is the only way she can get out of the trap she is in and pass her elevated standard: that she is equipped to be President of the United States.

Get used to it. We never did get any of Clinton's medical records, and the media never even asked. Despite manifest evidence of some kind of disease.
