An Open Letter to Sarah Palin (From "The American Conservative" Magazine
amconmag.com ^ | October 06, 2008

Posted on 10/01/2008 5:29:20 PM PDT by Tailgunner Joe

Recall that second night of the Republican Convention when you were told to blow off a reception in your honor hosted by Phyllis Schlafly so Joe Lieberman could chaperone your debut before the directors of AIPAC. Neoconservatives pay lip service to life, but, as their enthusiasm for Lieberman shows, they have higher priorities. Now they plan to make them yours.

You’ll find the new friends conducting your foreign-policy crash course pleasant enough, if a little dogmatic and a lot condescending. They call you “Project Sarah.” ....

They tell you that the U.S. is fighting “World War IV,” a struggle against “Islamofascism.” We can win, they say, as long as we’re prepared to bomb Iran and build up the national-security establishment at home, just like Reagan did.

Trouble is, your tutors also believe we’re still engaged in “World War III,” the Cold War with Russia. So maybe the Gipper didn’t win that one after all. In fact, neoconservatives like Norman Podhoretz chided Reagan for appeasing Moscow. And when terrorists struck the Marine barracks in Lebanon in 1983, Reagan, instead of “staying the course,” withdrew our troops. Your Beltway suitors prescribe the opposite of Reagan’s strategy.

And as they would have it, we’re not only waging World Wars III and IV, we’re still fighting World War II. At least, that’s the way it sounds when Robert Kagan opens a Washington Post op-ed by likening Russia’s conflict with Georgia to Hitler’s invasion of Czechoslovakia. ....

Here’s a hint: don’t believe everything you read in the papers, especially if the byline is Kristol or Krauthammer. ....

Ok, I get the part about Sarah being herself, but what in the hell is the rest of this article about? Sarah is who she is, she will continue to be Sarah, the spin masters can go f*** themselves and Sarah will still believe and do what she believes in. Go Sarah. I just wish the ticket was Palin/McCain and not McCain/Palin. I wonder if jelousy is why McCain keeps sending her into the MSM garbage disposal? Could be,better men than John have caved in to power.

Sarah was unable to attend the Schlafly event because she was meeting various world leaders coming to the UN

Does this pathetic group of crazies suggest that Sarah is not pro life enough for them.

They make me sick, every last one of them.

No different than the jewish groups who demanded Sarah be disinvited to the pro Israel anti Iran rally at the UN.

The country-clubbers are already trying to compromise her into a spineless RINO. She told Couric we need to "do something" about Global Warming (sic). Made my stomach turn.

McCain is trying to lose.

"Not the dreaded neocon"

Conservatives inveighed against communism for decades. We have had some success, but there are still pockets of resistance that threaten to bubble up and reinvigorate that horrid beast, e.g. Green Party.

By my reckoning we are only now coming to realize the true horridness of neoconservatism. We will need years more of commentary to fully flesh out the exact reasons why neoconservatism came to be, how it thrived, and how it decayed into the horrid beast which it is today.

Then decades more to rout it out of the political and cultural landscape.

Neoconservatism is a form of idol worship of abstractions masking itself as pragmatic idealism. It needs to go the way of communism and the dinosaurs.

I have to post this again as I do not want to do a Vanity:

But a question to you guys out there, when I phone bank I will always run into at least one man who has become unhinged over Sarah. And I am talking about Republicans. They buy into MSM “Sarah is unprepared” nonsense. I offer the talking points about her executive experience, taking on corruption, so forth and so on...but these “nuts” will not crack. I tend to go around it and focus on the “McCain the hero” vs Obama and the Ayers, Rezco, Wright connections.

What makes these guys tick? Are they just Sexist, stupid, or what? and how do I get through? I can read folks well enough to know they are no Obots posing as repubs. Heck my Dad thought Sarah was a horrible choice at first. But he was at least reasonable when an explanation was offered. Any suggestions on how to help bring these men back to the fold?

I was being facetious. Neocon is a fictional term, defined as whatever the person making the pejorative comment thinks it means.

The best way I have found is to draw out someones objections and answer them. See what their objection is based upon. If they don't have anything specific other than “unprepared” ask who they think is more unprepared for an executive role, a two year governor or a two year senator. If they think a senator is more prepared after two years in office (most of which he spent running for President) there is no helping them; something is fundamentally wrong with their thinking process.

Neocon is not a fictitious term. Maybe different people use it to mean different things ... like when they use the words liberal, conservative, or even communist.

However vague the notion of neoconservatism is, there is some "there" there. There are some well-defined positions from some well-known people who have called themselves neoconservative.

I was a big fan of the domestic policies of neoconservatives such as Charles Murray and Ben Wattenberg, but I am even now souring on those.

We can throw away the title "neocon" and still identify the bad ideas that have helped to wreak havoc in the world of late. In any case, however tainted the term "neocon" is, it is still a useful word to label those ideas we must rally against.

Who in the hell is running this McCain campaign? Sarah Palin is loved for who she already is. Did McCain’s people not see that his campaign was completely energized the day after Obama’s speech because McCain named Palin? This campaign has been handled in the most inept way for the past several weeks, starting with allowing Palin to be interviewed by Charlie Gibson with out demanding final approval of the slicing and dicing of her answers. I am appalled at how this campaign is being run and how Palin is being handled. Why do they need to rearrange her? Palin was hope for conservatives for the future. It wasn’t just about winning this race, which they would have done; it was about the beginning of the rebirth of conservatism and a return to Constitutional principles starting with their administration.

TAC’s authors like Buchanan seem to think it has a helluva lot to do with supporting Israel over the islamic hordes. Funny thing is, just about every democrat and republican of any stripe supports Israel over the islamic hordes. Including me. And I’m a helluva lot more conservative than Pat and his buddies.

I remember when Katie Couric was called perky and sunny. She looked like a bitter old hag when she was zeroing in on Sarah. Why on earth she was sent to her and Gibson right off the bat is beyond me. I agree let Sarah be Sarah! That is a winner.

99% of what is wrong with neoconservatism has nothing to do with Israel or "islamic hordes".

Neoconservatism brought us the expansion (rather than elimination) of the Dept. of Education and the NEA under Reagan. Neoconservatism is soft on illegal immigration. Neoconservatism is in favor of a free market over the short run (i.e. encourage businesses to do pretty much anything they can get away with) in exchange for socialism in the long run (i.e. government bailouts when the Masters of the Universe screw the Universe up.)

And the list goes on ...

Thank you for the reply. I think that is exactly what I am running up against, folks that have something fundamentally wrong with the thinking process.

I will still do my level headed best to bring them back. But some of the Latin males are the hardest to convince. They worked for Martinez and Bush but Palin just sticks in their craw.
