They didn't count on average Americans risking their financial futures to save the country from socialism

You have a point. I also think that these average Americans, who earned what they have, are tired of poor decisions by people who default on their mortgages and by the poor decisions made by businesses that lent them the money. [Most] Americans do believe in risk and rewards.
